Cruising Question

So Hannah is a champion cruiser. She pulls herself up onto our coffee table and just walks circles all around it, she even goes from coffee table to couch (if it's close enough). Which is really exciting. Here is my question (and yes I do know that every baby is different, just looking at ideas)

How long did it take your baby to go from cruising to taking their first step? I have a niece and a nephew that cruised forever before they started walking.
Also, did your LO walk before they learned to sit down? Hannah still can't get from cruising to sitting, she just either falls on her bum or she whines until we pick her up lol.

Re: Cruising Question

  • E was taking steps within weeks of transitioning from one piece of furniture to another. She cruised forever though.
H is still having trouble with sitting? She is just too busy trying to figure out how to walk to worry about sitting. She will get there.

  • Both of my boys pulled up and started cruising immediately. DS2 pulled up at 8 mos and took his first steps one day before his first bday. However, it still took him a several weeks to decide he wanted to walk instead of crawl. DS1 pulled up at 10 mos and took his first steps last week (13.5 mos), but hasn't taken more than 5-10 steps without holding a hand. I'm in NO rush for him to walk. It's already chaos around here!! With both of them, it took about a week to master the sitting from standing thing.

  • M pulled up to stand at 9 months, and started cruising shortly after, but that was a gradual improvement of what he could do. At first it was just pulling up, then cruising along the couch, then able to cruise around corners, then able to transfer from one furniture to another (which is what you are describing), then cruise/walk with a push toy.

M just turned 1 year and he is still not walking independently.  My understanding is that standing alone comes first before walking. M doesn't stand alone either.

As far as sitting down, I taught M how to "sit down" on his butt right after he learned to pull himself up at 9 months.  It's like a controlled falling so he gets down safely on his bottom.

It took at least 1-2 months before he developed enough muscle strength and balance to lower himself down (ie, squatting down then sits).

  • With DS he really gained confidence by cruising along the table and taking a step or two to the couch. Then he would cruise along the couch and take a step or two to the chair next to it. We used to move the chair a little farther until he was taking a couple of steps between them. I think he cruised for two or three months before walking. Have fun!

  • DS started cursing at around 10 months and could walk independently at a year for a couple steps. But really started walking at 14 months. Now his only speed is running so enjoy the stage where you are not running to keep up with your toddler.
