Wool ball question

I want to make my own wool dryer balls but wondering if I can use any other material than the wool in the middle? Like could I use fleece or something and ball it up tight, put pantyhose over it and then winde a bunch of the wool yarn over that and felt it. Would that work? Need some pointers to make my wool yarn go further, TIA!

    That would probably work.
It might not bounce as well, but I've wet wool felted a small smooth stone before (wrap some thread around it too). If you use enough roving it's still soft. Or I bet you could just use cheap quilt batting wrapped tightly with cotton string (I've used wool batting this way). Probably anything would work though.

You could probably use dishcloth cotton in the middle, or even an old washcloth.
IDK if the quilt batting would have some sort of flame retardant on it that would defeat the purpose of the wool dryer balls being chemical free?

I'd love to hear how this worked out-my plan is to make wool dryer balls after I get my Christmas knitting done.
