panorama cost

Hi ladies,
I was wondering if any of you might be able to share the cost of your panorama test.  I have an appointment Friday at 12 weeks and the doc's office told me that I had to call the panorama company directly to ask about the cost.  Panorama then told me that I had to call my insurance with a CPT code (code is 88271 for anyone who needs it).  My insurance says they only cover it if it is medically necessary (to them that means history of genetic mutation).  I am AMA, but no history.  So panorama told me their contracted cost with my insurance is $2967.  I asked what the cost was if I had no insurance and they replied $795.  I'm thinking it might be best to cancel the appointment and do an NT scan instead.  Any help on what your costs were is much appreciated!

Re: panorama cost

  • I was just in for mine and they told me $1500 out of pocket if insurance doesn't cover. I did the NT scan and we decided against panorama bc I had 0 risks and I'm only 28. Insurance said they'd cover it but they were kind of iffy so we decided I don't want to risk that $1500 bill if not. Baby looks perfect so I'm happy!

Yikes! I have Panorama and NT scan scheduled for tomorrow and didn't really think about considering costs (silly me...). However, I could swear that my doctor told me that on the off-chance insurance doesn't cover Panorama, they will only bill me $250 for it. $250 is okay in my book for all of the peace of mind that Panorama offers (especially after 2 MCs).

Hmmmm... thinking I should probably get on the phone with insurance now...  [-(

  • I've actually emailed Panorama now to say that my budget is $275 for the test. They are calling me back tonight to discuss.  I'll let everyone know.
  • So a specific person at the billing department at panorama told me they'd call me at 6 pm ET yesterday (they are west coast) via email. Hadn't heard from them by 6:20. Emailed the specific person back to ask if that was still going to work, no reply. Getting a bit frustrated, especially since I am super anal about keeping my word and commitments at my own work. Feeling the NT scan may be the best option for me.
  • They billed my insurance $2967. I haven't gotten a bill for my portion yet, but my doctor's office said that if I got a bill for more than $195 I needed to bring it to them.

  • Panorama told me it was 195 if insurance doesn't cover it. Still waiting for the bill.
  • I got in touch with them. The billing department told me to make sure I supplied my insurance information. They would appeal with the insurance but promised me that the max I would pay out of pocket would be $145. They said if I didn't have insurance I would pay $800 out of pocket. Hopefully they keep their word, wish I had it in writing.
  • Update from my Panorama this morning! I didn't realize they would do this, but they actually swabbed my husband's cheek to include in the testing! The lab person said they don't always do this - mainly because the husband isn't always at the appointment. After his swab and my blood, she packaged everything up in a little foil pouch and sent it on it's way to the testing center. Results should be back in about 12 days!

  • Hmmm. Was the swab for cystic fibrosis?
  • I know it's a bit different in Canada, but the Panorama tests is one thing that isn't covered by our provincial healthcare because it's rather new. We opted to do it instead of an NT scan and Amnio (which is covered by OHIP) because I was very scared of the miscarriage rate.

We had to pay privately for the test and it was $835 ($795 for the test + $40 for the trisomy 13 test). Our blood was taken at a public lab, we paid there, and then it was sent to the US for the actually testing to be done.

That seems pretty in line with what others are saying about the "non-insured" amounts.

  • Hi Ladies, Question I just came across this new testing since my husband and I are going to start trying for our second this year, and we both carry the Cystic Fibrosis gene. I did an amnio test with our daughter and was blessed with a healthy baby. I'm very nervous this time around. Does anyone know if the Panorama test includes looking for cystic Fibrosis?

    thanks!
