need recs on child proofing freezer drawer

I have a french door style fridge with the freezer on the bottom. Since the pull handle is at perfect height for the girls, they have figured out if they team up and give it a good tug, they can open the freezer. This has happened twice this morning; first time while I was in the restroom, and the second time while I had my back turned to try and carry on a decent phone conversation with my husband. annnnd they started pulling everything out!
I did a quick search and it seems most of the stick on straps get poor ratings. Anyone have one to recommend or some other suggestion?

Oh, and while I was putting everything back into said freezer, they went behind my back and emptied out the kitchen utensil drawers. Thank God they didn't get to the knives. I have no where else to put that stuff, either! UGH!

and not to forget, This weekend G climbed out of the crib for the first time and destroyed their room. Clothes, diapers, blankets, extra diaper cream, you name it, all over the carpet, in her hair, smeared on the walls and on her sister's crib (who managed to sleep through the entire free-for-all). Thankfully the cribs are convertible to toddler beds, so that's what we spent our weekend doing... emptying their room of all furniture, minus the cribs, and locked the dresser in their closet.

...sorry for the long post, I guess I just needed to destress a little to folks who might sympathize!...

  • Ha, kids are nuts. Hope the rest of your day goes more smoothly! No suggestions other than a blockade, but I just don't let them in the kitchen without an ability for me to catch them. Drawer latches are good for drawers. I have the family room completely gated off, which is the only way I can pee.

  • yeah.... they've learned how to defeat the Superyard setup by pushing it around like a forcefield since we have hardwood floors... and since my dream/demand when we were house shopping last spring was for an Open Concept family room with eat-in kitchen, well, it's biting me in the butt right now, lol..

  • Yeah, while my closed concept house isn't as nice as some of our friends', it definitely works well for herding twins. I had a more open house with #2, but he was one of those weird kids who didn't get into anything...so lucky there.

  • My first thought was "stock it with peas, broccoli and spinach. My kids won't touch that!" Haha
And that's all I've got... Good luck! That age is hard. We tried all kinds of child proofing and it was tough. But they do grow out of it.

This post just set my super "hw am I going to handle twin girls" anxiety up a few notches!!! Although at the same time I suppose I can feel better knowing it's going to happen so just be prepared. We have the same fridge, open concept living room and kitchen and 2 girls on the way!

  • @BabyVDM , sorry, I sure don't want to cause you any more stress! This is just a new "I'm 2 and I can do it" phase, apparently..
It is more of a challenge with twins than with a singleton, at least in my experience. They learn from each other's attempts and mistakes, so it takes half of the time to figure something out. If it's any consolation, I keep telling myself this just means they are brilliant, LOL... Kind of like the Minions celebrating victory !
Today, one of them found a bright blue Sharpie (I have no idea where they'd stashed it) and had drawn on the hardwood floors within a blink of an eye. It's like when I have my back turned to scold one of them, her partner in crime is getting into something else. And being in my 6th month with #5, they've figured out Mommy can't run as fast as them anymore, lol...

  • We have these on our freezer drawer for the same reason that you're wanting them. It's been a few weeks and so far they are working pretty well.

    https://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=19349836&cp=2255957.2273443.4392756.2256208.2256220&parentPage=family

I put them on after the kids were in bed so they had about 12 hours or so rather than the 24 hours that it recommends before the kids tried to open the drawer. My 7 year old has figured out how to unlatch them but the 2.5 year olds haven't been able to figure it out and now don't really bother with the drawer. I will warn you - it will probably take you a little while to get used to having them there. I've attempted to open the drawer without unlatching the locks multiple times. Also, we didn't curve them around the front because the edge of the drawer was too wide for that. We have one end on the body of the fridge and the other end on the edge of the drawer.

Thanks, MCB... I'll give that one a try... Do you have a stainless steel or painted fridge? I thought maybe the SS doesn't hold the adhesive as well or something kooky like that.

EDITED to add: I just realized your oldest is Christian,, that's my oldest son's name, too!

We have a white painted steel fridge. It wouldn't have been my first choice but we bought it refurbished at a discount and it matched the appliances that were already in the house so....

My husband is also named Christian but he and our oldest son have different middle names, so not quite a junior.
