So even though I'm only 11 weeks, of course I've already begun thinking of names! I don't have a list made or anything, but I've been reading through lists and the posts on BNB and taking stock.
So, I've decided I like a certain name for a girl. Yippee! However, there was a fairly popular TV series with the main character with that name. Just out of curiosity, I googled the show, so I could see when it was on air. Late to mid-90s, like I thought. The big discovery was that the character whose name I like ALSO HAS OUR LAST NAME (which is common, like Smith).
So... would you give us the side-eye if our spawn's name was the exact same as a mid-90s TV protagonist? Is that totally lame? Should I even give a damn? FWIW, I watched the show as a teen fairly regularly, and didn't remember her character's last name. So I'm not sure how many other people would either. It's not as popular a character as say, Rachel Greene or Bill Cosby. A little more obscure...though I can't give any good examples at the moment.
I realize I'm a long way off on having to make such a decision, but I'm dying to know what others would think about such a conundrum.

This was my first thought as well. I actually love the name Blossom, if that's it.
Anyway-- I think we are pretty fairly well removed from 90s pop culture at this time, and our children will be even more so.

I think a lot of names might not matter, as they're pop culture references that may be forgotten about soon enough.
If the name was Michelle Tanner or Stephanie Tanner, I admit that I'd immediately think of Full House, but those are names (both first and last) that are common enough that I wouldn't read much into it. If it's more obscure, like Blossom, then I don't know.

OMG...I hope Brenda Walsh isn't obscure.

Ha! We are considering something similar, but as a FN MN.
I like the name Wayland and "Jennings" will be used as a middle name because it is a family name. Hence, his name will be Wayland Jennings LN which is quite similar to the country singer Waylon Jennings. The board was split on whether it was okay. IRL, most people didn't think it was a big deal and pointed out by the time the kid is in school, none of his classmates will probably know who Waylon Jennings is.
So, in sum, unless it is super, duper popular where everyone would recognize it (like naming your kid Bill Clinton or something), I would not worry about it.

My guesses: Kelly Kapowski (sp?), Rachel Green, Phoebe Buffay, Monica Geller, Felicity Porter, and Grace Adler.
My top guess is Felicity Porter because Porter is a relatively common last name and Felicity has come back as a popular name...
Can you at least tell us if someone on this thread has guessed it?

If you're last name is common it doesn't matter. Just give us the show. It will make all the difference.

If I had a kid in my class named Zach Morris,I would just think the parents are awesome. I think that can depend on the character, though. Ray Pruit, say, not so much.
FWIW... if I could, I'd name a boy and girl or B/G twins Brenda and Brandon. Even if my last name was Walsh. I love the show that much. So if your mystery name is Brenda Walsh, which I doubt, then you've got both my thumbs up and my envy. ;-)

I saw that too! Maybe why it came to mind.
The boy name we picked if DD had been a boy would have been the same FN/LN combo as a cranky comic strip neighbor and the tragic character who kills the protagonist in a novel that every high school student reads. We were prepared to go forward with it anyway since having a common LN results in many FN options being cultural references. .
OP, if you're still reading, just depends on how popular the show and how beloved the character. And how much the last name was emphasized. Some shows emphasize that more than others, and for some characters more than others.
