Aflac short term disability help

Nj teacher here; Ok so since I'm due beginning of may ill be using my sick/ personal days first which will lead me to may 15 (assuming All goes well ill start my maternity leave April 15) on may 15 ill use Fmla for the remainder of the school year. How much does this pay in no? I know it's paid cause we are required as no to pay into the program in nj but I just don't know how much. For the remainder of the summer ill use my Aflac short term disability plan which includes a hospital plan and a 6 week (for bag delivery) pay out plan which is about 80% of my salary for 6 weeks. Are there any things I'm missing out on? Will Aflac only pay for 6 weeks? Will they also cover the 2 weeks before delivery that I'm assuming my dr will put me out? Any nj teachers that have been through all this before I could use your help;) thank you!!!!

Re: Aflac short term disability help

  • Are you asking how much FMLA pays? Or Aflac? You'd have to check your policy for the latter, but the former pays nothing. Your school district might provide some kind of paid leave if you're apparently required to pay into something, but FMLA has nothing to do with paid leave.

  • FMLA only protects your job, it does not guarantee you pay.

Me: Stage II endo, borderline high FSH
    DH: perfect
    1 lap, 5 IUIs = 4 BFNs and 1 c/p
    2 IVFs, 2 FETs = 1 BFN, 1 c/p, 1 ectopic and finally a sticky BFP in May 2011!

  • Oops it's family leave act and as a nj teacher I'm required to pay into it it's different than the one that just protects your job I think I'm using the wrong acronym as I now see Fmla is different from nj family leave act aka njfla
  • Are you unionized? I'd think that would be where you'd get the answers with regard to leave, if you don't want to ask HR.

  • I'm a NJ teacher (yay us!) and have the Aflac too. FLMA or whatever it is pays you 2/3 of your salary for 6 weeks. You can then take another 6 weeks unpaid and keep your insurance coverage

I just called Aflac last week and got the amount I"ll get paid. It depends which one you pick/how long the waiting period is on yoru policy. I didn't even have any of the paperwork but I called and gave them my social and they looked it up. I have a 2 week waiting period, so I'll get about 2400 for a natural birth, 3500 for a c/s.

THey'd cover you before, but it depends what your waiting period is. Depending on your policy you have to be out a certain number of days before it kicks in. I also wonder what happens with insurance coverage, assuming you're on your policy through school. (like how long can you be on it and out on disability?)

Yay for nj teachers having may babies! I knew nj offered the 6 weeks 2/3 paid I thought I was losing it. I have no elim period and get 3200 for 6 weeks I've heard rumors that you can also be paid for the days before delivery that the dr puts you out but that sounds a little too good to be true. Time to call Aflac!
  • I am also a teacher and my WORK will only pay for whatever sick days I have. But I have a separate aflac policy outside of work. I called last week to check into what they pay here is a few things they told me:

    1. You have to have the policy for longer than 9 months (which I do, so make sure you do as well...)
    2. They will pay for 60% of your pay for 4 weeks for a vaginal birth
    3. 60% of your pay for 6 weeks for a C-section.

Also, not that you asked, but check with your school/union about your maternity leave (assuming you have one..) I have to take mine all of May and then June- until the end of the school year. They are preferring that my last week of work is the end of April so that they can hire a sub for the whole month of May (which is fine by me!). I'm sure if I wanted to work up until my due date they would be fine with it, but I figured whatever is easier for them, me, and my students is best.
