Wakeful Questionnaire

Whether you are through it or in the midst of it - I'm curious about some things.  PLEASE don't turn this thread into a debate about sleep training - just answer the questions.  No judgment here!

1.  How long was your baby sleeping prior to wakeful?  How many wake ups at night prior to wakeful?
2.  How old was your baby when wakeful started?
3.  How long did wakeful lasted (or how long has it been going)?
4.  How many wake ups at night during wakeful on average?  Worst?
5.  What did you find to be the best wake to cope?
6.  Did you resort to sleep training of any sort?  At what point and what kind of sleep training?  Did it work?
7.  After the wakeful period, did sleeping go back to how it was before? Or is it a new normal?

Re: Wakeful Questionnaire

  • 1. How long was your baby sleeping prior to wakeful? How many wake ups at night prior to wakeful? A 5-7 hour stretch then up every 3 hours, so usually up twice to eat and that was it.

     2. How old was your baby when wakeful started? Right around 4 months

     3. How long did wakeful lasted (or how long has it been going)? About 4 weeks now

     4. How many wake ups at night during wakeful on average? Worst? Average about 6, worst 12 in a 12 hour night. Last night was only 3, AMAZING!

    5. What did you find to be the best wake to cope? Always try to replug the pacifier first, then nurse if that doesn't work (or if it has been a while since she set then go straight to nursing). If she won't settle after nursing then I need to hold her and give her the pacifier until she's in a very deep sleep.

    6. Did you resort to sleep training of any sort? At what point and what kind of sleep training? Did it work? Not yet. If she has a lot more wakeful nights this week I might consider it on the weekend, but last night was good, so I'm hopeful.

     7. After the wakeful period, did sleeping go back to how it was before? Or is it a new normal? Still in it.

    1. How long was your baby sleeping prior to wakeful? How many wake ups at night prior to wakeful?
9-11hrs, I always gave him the chance to sleep for 12hrs so sometimes there would be 1 wake up, other days none.
    2. How old was your baby when wakeful started?
    4 months
    3. How long did wakeful lasted (or how long has it been going)?
Still in it, been going for 3/4 weeks
    4. How many wake ups at night during wakeful on average? Worst?
Average is 4 now :( worst has been 6.
    5. What did you find to be the best wake to cope? Nurse every time he wakes. It's easier for me and immediately comforts him... Back to sleep in no time.
    6. Did you resort to sleep training of any sort? At what point and what kind of sleep training? Did it work?
    Nope.
    7. After the wakeful period, did sleeping go back to how it was before? Or is it a new normal?
I'm hanging on to hope that it goes back to normal but we'll see!

  • 1. 12 hours
    2. 4 months or so
    3. Lasted almost 3 weeks. Knock on wood, I think we are coming out/out of it.
    4. Average is 2, worst was every two hours, that was about two weeks straight.
    5. Cope for me? I went to sleep right after putting LO to bed. And crying. Lots of crying.
    6. No. I started not traveling anywhere basically because I wanted sleep.
    7. For the past few days she has been waking once a night. Not sttn but way better than waking every two hours!
  • 1.  How long was your baby sleeping prior to wakeful?  How many wake ups at night prior to wakeful?  6-8 hours for first stretch, then sleep 2-3 more, wake to eat, then sleep another two before waking for the day.
    2.  How old was your baby when wakeful started? Right before she turned 4 months.
    3.  How long did wakeful lasted (or how long has it been going)?  4 weeks, still ongoing
    4.  How many wake ups at night during wakeful on average? 3-4  Worst? 5?
    5.  What did you find to be the best wake to cope?  I co-sleep after the second wake-up.  I can't stand not sleeping at all.
    6.  Did you resort to sleep training of any sort?  At what point and what kind of sleep training?  Did it work?  No, no sleep training.  I feel like she needs me.  I do let her fuss a little before I go to get her, and I do sometimes stand by her crib while she fusses and try to soothe her.
    7.  After the wakeful period, did sleeping go back to how it was before? Or is it a new normal?  TBD, still going strong with the whole not sleeping thing.

  • Hi, I don't normally post on this board although I am a June 2013 mom!  But I am very interested in the wakeful period so thought I would respond...also very interested in everyone's responses :)

    1.  How long was your baby sleeping prior to wakeful?  How many wake ups at night prior to wakeful?  We would put him down with his last feeding around 10:30pm-11pm.  He would wake to eat at 2-3ish and then again 5:30-6:30ish and then back to sleep until 8ish and up for the day.
    2.  How old was your baby when wakeful started?  About 3 1/2 months
    3.  How long did wakeful lasted (or how long has it been going)?  About 2 weeks
    4.  How many wake ups at night during wakeful on average?  Worst?  On average he went to sleep a little earlier and added an additional feeding.  I guess on average he was up three times a night.  Worst was a couple nights he was up five times a night.
    5.  What did you find to be the best wake to cope?  When wakeful started I was EBF so it was more draining on me.  Then halfway through wakeful we started switching to formula so my body could go back to normal and we could try for another baby.  So then DH started taking a feeding in the middle of the night which helped tremendously.
    6.  Did you resort to sleep training of any sort?  At what point and what kind of sleep training?  Did it work?  Yes, we did sleep train.  We started putting DS to bed drowsy but awake for naps and for nighttime.  He would kick and grunt (not cry) himself to sleep after about ten minutes (he really isn't a crier).  He has always "slept" at night (like, from day one he never was up all night refusing to sleep or crying at all ever) with the exception of waking up to eat but then would immediately zonk out when he was finished.  But during the wakeful he got really really fussy and agitated before going down at nighttime.  We started the sleep train right as wakeful was tapering off.  IT HELPED TREMENDOUSLY.  We have no issues now of going to sleep.
    7.  After the wakeful period, did sleeping go back to how it was before? Or is it a new normal? After wakeful, he was about 4 months and at this point exclusively formula fed plus we intro'd food right at 4 months.  For the last month he has exclusively dropped his middle of the night feedings.  We feed him and put him down at about 9:30pm and he sleeps straight through until 6:30am.  I feed him at 6:30am and he immediately zonks out until about 8:30-9ish and then is up for the day.  I attribute this to the formula (realized after weaning my supply was running out), the food we have intro'd, and the sleep training.

  • 1.  How long was your baby sleeping prior to wakeful?  How many wake ups at night prior to wakeful?  A 2-3 hour stretch, wake (for bedtime routine--the first part of the night she slept on me while I chilled on the couch), a 7-hour stretch, wake, a 2 hour stretch.
    2.  How old was your baby when wakeful started?  Maybe 4 months and a week old

    3.  How long did wakeful lasted (or how long has it been going)?  Still going.  She'll be 5 months old this week.

    4.  How many wake ups at night during wakeful on average?  Worst?  Average, probably 3 or 4.  Worst, maybe 6?

    5.  What did you find to be the best wake to cope?  Have her sleep in her crib right next to our bed so the wakings weren't too disturbing.  Sometimes she just wants her pacifier and she'll fall back asleep, so this way I can get to her before she's fully awake.  She also sleeps in my bed from 5 A.M. (when DH gets up for work) until wake-up time.

    6.  Did you resort to sleep training of any sort?  At what point and what kind of sleep training?  Did it work?  Nope.  Not something we'd consider this early.

    7.  After the wakeful period, did sleeping go back to how it was before? Or is it a new normal?  Sigh.  I'll have to let you know!

    6.  I did not. There were days I considered it but I knew he would cut back on wake ups when he was ready to
    7.  New normal. He sleeps 7pm-10pm, eats, sleeps 10:30-4 or so, eats, sleeps 4:30-8:30

  • 1. How long was your baby sleeping prior to wakeful? How many wake ups at night prior to wakeful?      I feel like we've been through 2 wakeful periods now. One at 4 months and another at 5 months. Prior to the 5 months wakeful she was STTN.

    6. Did you resort to sleep training of any sort? At what point and what kind of sleep training? Did it work?     We did do sleep training. We let her CIO or whine it out most of the time, for 5 minutes straight and then comforted her, and then repeat. It did being to work after about 4 days.
    7. After the wakeful period, did sleeping go back to how it was before? Or is it a new normal?     She is back to STTN most nights. She occasionally will wake up once in the night.
