Can antibiotics cause gas/fussiness in EBF baby?

A few days ago, I was put on some amoxicillin for a sinus infection I got, following the flu a couple weeks ago. For the past 3 nights, LO has woken every hour from 8pm-3am with horrendous gas. He wakes screaming and when I get him, he farts and burps and is just generally really squirmy. I nurse him back to sleep and within minutes, he's kicking and squirming again. I can't figure out what's going on, the antibiotics are the only thing I can think of.

I had a UTI a week after delivery and had the same antibiotics and he was fine then but I think these are a pretty strong dose.... Maybe that's contributing to it? In any case, he's in obvious discomfort but I'm not sure why he has such bad gas. Any experience with this? Thanks!

  • When I was on them for a GI infection they warned me it may give LO a looser stool. They didn't say anything about gas specifically but it obviously affects their tummy if it would affect his poop, so it would make sense that gas could result from the antibiotics also. Hope you feel better soon!(:

  • When I was on antibiotics for mastitis I definitely noticed DS was more gassy, fussy and uncomfortable.

  • Antibiotics kill good bacteria too so I could definitely see it causing stomach changes since proper gut flora is so important for digestion.

  • Ah. Makes sense. Thanks so much ladies. I only have 3 days left if antibiotics. Will probiotics still help? What kind ? Where do I get them? In canada so not sure if the same stuff is available?
