mamaRoo Questions

DH and I walked around Babies R Us today to start our registry.  We didn't get very far but DH was instantly drawn to the 4mama mamaRoo infant seat.

If anyone has experience with it.. I have some questions...

1) Can this replace a swing?  I know everything depends on what the lil one will prefer once he arrives, but is it safe to assume I could get this in lieu of a a swing?

2) In terms of the number of months a baby can typically use this for, how does it compare to a swing?

3) A store associate mentioned that she heard moms are using them also as bassinets... this made me raise an eyebrow... is this true?  It's a bit low to the floor so if I put it next to my bed my baby would be way down there, but if it does in fact double as a bassinet I can see it being more worth the price.

Thoughts??

Re: mamaRoo Questions

  • FTM here, but we opted for this as our swing as we wanted something that wouldn't take up a ton of space.  We are getting a separate RNP for a bassinet.

RIP Dr. Irving Fishman - 10/1/19-7/25/10 - thank you for holding on for me.
You made my wedding day complete.

  • We used ours for naps and occasionally at night.. It did replace a swing for us but I think it is always a toss up in terms of what kind of swing a baby will prefer.
  • The mamaroo has zero neck support. Even if you look at the ad picture the baby''s head is slumped to the side. I was surprised they didn't correct that for the pic!! It has very little padding as well. I would compare it to a nylon sling. It's cool looking and you are right it doesn't take up a lot of space but I would highly NOT recommend it. There are now other swings on the market offering more support that are still smaller. For reference I had the snug a bunny as well and although it was big, dd used it for many naps until well over 6 months. It was very soft and supportive. The mamaroo has some pointless functions that you pay for too...I mean really your infant doesn't care to listen to an iPod!! It also doesn't need that many movement options...they are all just extras you pay for that they should have taken off and put toward the actual seat structure.
  • I've heard it's a waste of money. Apparently it doesn't provide support as pp noted and it moves so slow that its not effective. I will be getting a regular swing and a baby bjorn bouncer. Everyone I know who has one just loves it!
  • We bought a mamaroo for our first son and he hated it...found out he likes to swing fast.  We took it back and purchased the snuggabunny.

However, the rockaroo does look pretty awesome since it has the swinging motion.  Maybe it is worth the wait (I think I heard it is coming out in January).

    Thanks for the input!

I wonder how much the rockaroo will be. Probably closer to $2million than $200..... lol
  • Just want to echo the PP who said this is a total waste of money. I'm sure there are some babies who are soothed by the MamaRoo but I've never met one. We bought one brand new in box for about $80 off Craigslist (which should have been a sign! The woman who sold it to us had a 5-month-old!). But MH was also attracted to the sleek design in the store.

The motion never put my son to sleep and actually woke him up when we put him down already asleep. We got a Snugabunny swing instead and this did the trick. It's not as cool-looking and takes up several times the space, but it's cheaper and actually works.

I held on to our MamaRoo until DS was 11 months (inertia really) and then sold it on Craigslist, essentially "new in box" for $80 to another sucker FTM. I felt guilty about that, but reasoned that the woman who sold it to us was probably not even the first owner of it....:(
  • The blog I read was saying between $159-179 for the rockaroo, which is average price for a decent swing.
