pack n play useful for everyday use?

I wasn't planning on getting a pack n play bc my mom has one that I thought I would just use/borrow if traveling -- friend of family just bought me brand new one (not on registry) -- I am not sure if I see usefulness for everyday ...they seem bulky etc.. (better than the old playpens from our youth tho !) but as baby gets more mobile and I want to contain him for a bit.. are there easier options ? toys on floor w a gate in room or something?? as for newborn stage I will use rock n play etc.. desperately trying to keep baby gear down to truly worthwhile items only!

Re: pack n play useful for everyday use?

  •  I used mine to death with kids #2-5! Literally, my fifth finally broke the bottom of it when she was a toddler.

I used it as a place to put baby safely when I needed to do something like open the oven, or baby needed a place to be without getting stomped on by a sibling. I did not have a room I could gate off in that house-nor in this one, so I'll be getting another one for sure! Oh we traveled with it too, and took it visiting, because most people don't have a safe place to put baby down unless they currently have babies too.

  • I use mine every day. LO sleeps in it in our room every night and sometimes for naps
  • never used it once. give it to MIL to keep at her house

  • We use ours daily like PP said as a place to contain LO & as a travel bed. I actually have 2 , but if I were to do it again I would have started with second one because it will last you well into toddlerhood:

  • We used ours everyday. It was a changing station/nap crib during the day on the main level. And yes, when they got older it was a great way to contain them so I could cook/clean.

  • Only used it for trips.
  • It really depends on how your house is set up & what works for you.  We used the RnP until around 3.5 months when he started to roll over.  Then I wasn't comfortable using it anymore, but I still wanted him in our room at night for a few more months.  (I BF'ed)  So we used the PnP.  It was awesome for that.

I can also see it being useful if you have a multi-level house and want a place to change baby when you aren't on the same level that you have your changing station.

We rarely used ours as a place to contain baby with our first, but we use it more for our second.  It's nice to keep them contained when you need to open the oven or protect them from big siblings. Although one of those circle gates by North States would work just as well I think.

  • I really didn't think we would use ours that much. It was handed down but is a nice one with the changer and bassinet. We set it up in the living room and have used it a ton. It was one of things I thought we would end up packing up and putting in the closet.
