Success after IF

BLW Peeps

Hey ladies!  We are ready to start solids with L tomorrow (how the hell did my kid get to be 6 months old already?!).  I have read up on all the BLW stuff and we are going to do some sort of modified version of it.  Couple of questions for those of you who have been or are currently going through it...

1. What were the very first foods you introduced?  Did you do more than one food at a sitting at first?  If not, when did you start to do more than one food at a meal?

2. Did you follow the whole "wait a few days" before introducing a new food?

3. Did you offer a sippy cup right from the first meal?

4. My pedi is all on board with this, but mentioned making sure L has enough iron in his diet.  He pushed a little for some sort of cereal in his diet.  I'm not completely on board with this, but do want to make sure he has enough iron.  He is FF if that matters.  Did you do any cereal (preloaded spoon or otherwise) or just make sure LO had iron rich foods?

5. How long after a formula or breast feeding did you try the solids?  Like right between two feedings or some other time?

Sorry for all the questions.  I'm super excited to start all this but just curious about the whole logistics of it.

Thanks in advance ladies!  You are awesome!

Re: BLW Peeps

  • J's first food was banana. She dug it, but spit out most out it (facial expression indicated it was a hit). We stuck with soft, single ingredient food for awhile. Probably longer than necessary because we were going to ILs when J was 6.5mo and didn't want anyone feeding her crap.

Easy stuff was avocado, whole wheat noodles, banana, blueberries (broken open with a fork), sweet potato slices.

I wasn't very good about waiting a few days between new foods, but we didn't do BLW every day.

J has never mastered the sippy cup. However, she can drink from a cup (assisted) and will go to town on the fat straw Camelbak water bottles (drink upright with no tip).

I don't think with FF babies you need to worry about iron if your formula is fortified with iron.

J was not a fan of spoon feeding. however, when we are out and I am eating something she wants to try and I'm not willing to let her make a huge mess she will gobble like a little piggy off the end of a fork or spoon.

Good luck! I really enjoy BLW. It is easy and we all eat together!

  • 1) avocado, banana, mango strips. we only did 1 food per meal.  The first week or so, most of the food ended up not going into the mouth.  It reallly took a little while before M was coordinated enough to bring the food into his mouth.  I think it was at least a couple of weeks before we did more than 1 foods per meal.

    2) no, didn't have the patience!  some days i even introduced more than 1 foods on the same day.

    3) No. we didn't buy M  sippy cup until he was 7 months.  It took 2 weeks + before he figured out how to drink out of a sippy.

    4) I don't think you need to worry since your LO is FF.  I did spoon-feed M oatmeal (regular oatmeal, not oatmeal cereal) because M is BF.

    5) when we first started, I think we offered solids not long after M was BF.  at the beginning, they eat so little that it's really more for practice than for nutrition.

    Have fun!

  • 1. What were the very first foods you introduced?
Banana, Avocado, bell peppers, pineapple, whatever we were eating.
Did you do more than one food at a sitting at first?
    Not usually.
If not, when did you start to do more than one food at a meal?
Much later, when my lo was eating for real.

    2. Did you follow the whole "wait a few days" before introducing a new food?
    No

    3. Did you offer a sippy cup right from the first meal?
Yes, with water. I also use a doidy cup with water

I think formula gives plenty of iron, so you could probably skip the cereal. It would matter more if you BF. I did do baby oatmeal for my lo for breakfast. that is the only thing i spoon fed him.

    5. How long after a formula or breast feeding did you try the solids?  Like right between two feedings or some other time?
Half way in between if I could. We had some pretty horrific gag sessions that turned into projectile formula vomit (like an entire bottle's worth). No bueno.

    Good luck!

  • 1. First foods were broccoli, cucumber, sweet potato, zuchinni. One food per meal for the first 2-3weeks.  Only did one meal (dinner) a day for a month then added lunch for a month.  DD was 9 or 10 months before we did 3 meals a day. We took it slow because DD wasnt that interested.  DS on the other hand is a piggy so he will probably get to 3 meals a day a lot faster.

    2. Did not wait before starting a new food.

    3. Yes we give a straw cup.

    4. Formula has more than enough iron.  I BF DD and skipped cereal/oatmeal and her iron levels were normal at 9 and 12 month check.

    5. Nurse at 5pm dinner at 5:45ish and then nurse at 7pm.
