volunteer ideas to do with 2 year old

I thought it would be a good idea to take the opportunity to introduce my 2 year old daughter to the idea of giving back and helping those in need. what are some age appropriate volunteer things we can do with her? I thought with the holidays just around the corner this would be a better time then any to start!

Re: volunteer ideas to do with 2 year old

  • The kids and I will be baking for the homeless shelter and my oldest and I will be serving there next week.

Other ideas: Adopt-a-family, meals on wheels, get a present for a child from the present tree, drop off toy donations at a childrens hospital, women's shelter, etc.

  • We walk dogs at a local shelter sometimes. She also can sort and pack canned goods.
"Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies. God damn it, you've got to be kind." - Kurt Vonnegut

We pick out food for food drives and he helps me fill up bags and deliver them.

We take Thanksgiving meals to people for Meals on Wheels.

He helps me pick out toys for Toys for Tots (or similar charities) and deliver them.

Those are all seasonal things, but we also do the SOLVE beach clean up when the weather is warmer.

Where do you go? I'm pretty sure you're somewhat local to me. I used to volunteer at the city animal control shelter, and I know this wouldn't be allowed there. I'd love to get DS involved in volunteering in an animal shelter.
We go to NGAP (National Greyhound Adoption Program) in the Northeast.

  • We collect food for the food bank. Each time we shop, we pick up an extra item or two to put in our food bank box (I let DS pick) and when it's full we take it together to drop it off. This time of year is also good for picking out toys, books, etc, for drives. In the winter we help shovel our neighbor's driveway. He's not actually helpful yet, but he thinks he is and that's enough. ;)
  • I love the idea of adopting a family to buy Christmas presents.  Other than that, we will just look for opportunities through our church.

  • We do Toys for Tots. Toys R Us usually collects for them. I take the girls to the store and ask them to pick out a gift for a child that might not get one otherwise. Last year DD1 picked a Care Bear. This year I'll have each girl pick a gift. My work usually collects for Project Wish Book (they collect books for children), so I might have each girl pick out a new book to donate.
