Taking toddler to open house?

Hi Ladies,

DH and I are looking to move a little out from where we are currently. An hour or so. Not that far. We made some appointments to go look at houses. We do not have anyone to watch our kids & need to take them with us. Their ages are 1 & 4. Do you have any tips in what is a good way to explain the process to our oldest? We have discussed with him about moving & that we are looking for our forever home. We want him to be involved so that he would be comfortable in where we are going but we also don't want it to be too much for him.
Thoughts?

  • We were house hunting when DS was three and a half. Not much explanation was needed. He really enjoyed walking through different houses (especially ones that were vacant and he could just walk around in circles and explore).

  • We have been house hunting with DD as well.  She LOVES running around the empty homes.  The ones that are occupied are a little different since she wants to touch everything.  I agree with PP, schedule these viewings around their eating and napping schedule.  Overall, DD has done great.  Now that we are in the inspection/closing stage, I prefer to have someone watch DD so that I am not distracted and can really focus on what is going on!

  • I would have no issues taking my young kids to an open house.  My 3 year old would have fun and we would just try and carry the 22 month old as much as possible.
