Milk and Soy sensitivity questions

Good morning ladies!

So Lucas was diagnosed with milk protein allergy yesterday at his Dr appt.  It doesn't surprise me as DD was intolerant as well.  The problem I am having is this: since I have been BF this time around if I want to keep it up (which I do) I will have to remove dairy and soy from my diet...  This is going to be very hard for me.  Has anyone else had to do this? I would love any suggestions on meals or tips to make the transition easier.  TIA!

Re: Milk and Soy sensitivity questions

  • My son also has a milk protein allergy. As far as breastfeeding it was a pain but I don't consume much dairy to begin with so I was okay. When we had to supplement with formula at 11 months that was when it got tricky. After some research We used earths best soy formula but it was really expensive and hard to find ( in Chicago).
I would spend some time whenever you get a moment HA and research backup formula just in case. When I needed it we were scrambling and I wished I had at least gotten all if the information together sooner since it was harder than just running to target!

  • There is an MSPI check in on the breastfeeding board.  There are also plenty of blogs and websites devoted to eating dairy and soy free.  Honestly the best course of action is to eat mainly whole foods and be very careful about reading the labels on anything processed.  Below is a link to MSPImama.  She has a lot of great information.

DS1 had MSPI and I plan to go dairy and soy free preemptively for DS2.

It is a difficult adjustment initially but once you are used to eating that way it gets easier.  Good luck.
  • Thanks for the info ladies!  I will check in with the 0-3 month board as well as the BF board.  @NYmama1 - thanks for the link.  It looks like it has  a ton of good information. I appreciate it.
  • @amyg* - the main thing was that there was blood in his stool which the ped. tested.  He also is having stomach pain (or at least it appears that way due to his crunching and crying which gets better with the rubbing of the belly).  He also had some green mucous like poop along with lots of spit up.

I will absolutely try feeding from one side the next few feedings to see how that goes.  I was dairy free all day yesterday and today.  We also were given some Similac Alimentum for supplementation if needed from his ped.

  • My first had an allergy to the milk protein casein. I tried breastfeeding but I couldn't last on the diet. The pediatrician wanted him on alimentum but the specialist we saw said he would be fine in any Gerber Good Start because none of their formula had casein in it. He is six now so I don't know if other brands have made that change but he did great on Good Start and when I need to supplement with my others that's all I will use.
  • @AmyG* - I saw a thread yesterday in which you told wedding06 that if she can pump 3 - 6 oz. after a feeding she has oversupply. I'm getting this amount of pumped milk as well when I finish BF. I didn't see the issue as I figured we could get started on storing it for daycare and then eventually maybe donate some.

But based on what you said earlier in this posting it's sounding like that can change the composition of the milk? Can you elaborate on this a little?

    Thanks so much.
