Mastitis Grrr....

I'm just having no luck with breastfeeding.  Ended up in the hospital two nights ago with a high fever and flu like symptoms.  Turned out to be mastitis.  Still going to stick it out with the breastfeeding in the hopes it'll get better, but I seriously can't catch a break.

Any others experience mastitis?  I'm on antibiotics, but the other doctor's order of massaging the breast is super painful!

Re: Mastitis Grrr....

  • Ugh, I'm so sorry. Mastitis is horrible. I had it when my son was almost 3 weeks old. The best thing you can do for it is nurse frequently. I know how much it hurts, but nursing as much as you can really will help. And heat. Try a warm/hot compress on the affected breast, or a warm shower. Take the antibiotics and gently massage. Rest as often as you can. I felt better in about 2 and a half days. Good luck!!

  • A friend of mine just went through this.  Bless your heart, I know you are miserable.  Good news is that the antibiotics should help you in a day or two.  Hope you feel better soon.
  • Soak your breasts in warm water, with epsom salt if you have it. You have to get rid of the underlying clog there or it will just come back.

  • I had it a couple weeks ago.  I came down with severe flu-like symptoms, and I thought I had a virus, b/c I didn't even notice any breast pain.  I felt so awful I was in bed for 24 hours, and it was only the next day I saw my breast in the mirror and realized what was going on.  By then I was doing better, so didn't need antibiotics.  Feel better soon!
