Update: It was the swaddle all along.

Original thread here: https://forums.thebump.com/discussion/12139605/is-this-the-4-month-wakeful-if-so-help-me#latest

Update: Last night and tonight I swaddled DD after a month of being swaddle weaned, and I kind of feel like crap about it. I feel like we took a step backwards, but for 2 weeks she hasn't slept a wink unless it's on me or with me. I want my bed and arms and sanity and nap time reprieve back, so after sitting on it for a while I went and unboxed the sleep sack swaddle. What do you know, she sleeps in her PNP again. It was all about the swaddle.

But she's 5 months and can roll both ways now. Should I be doing this? I feel like its safer than bed sharing, but I keep reading to discontinue the swaddle at 4 months/14 weeks/rolling over. When should I try again to take the swaddle away?

Your thoughts, opinions, advice, and hair petting would be much appreciated!

Re: Update: It was the swaddle all along.

  • DD will be 5 mos on the 14th and is still swaddled. But she doesn't roll from back to tummy yet only tummy to back and most of the time she wiggles one or both arms out. I'm not rushing it. I have started to loosen the swaddle to start the weaning process but that's about it.

  • Once babies start to roll, you should
    Discontinue use of the swaddle.

  • We graduated to the sleep suit. We are 5.5 months. But she doesn't roll back to tummy. She wears the suit for naps too.

  • I had a long conversation with our pediatrician about this back at DD's 4 month appointment. At that time she had learned to roll from stomach to back but not back to stomach so I wanted to get the details about what to do when they start rolling.

Our pediatrician was very relaxed about it and strongly feels that babies will let you know when they're done with the swaddle by learning to break out of it all the time. (Even the Velcro ones, my daughter gets out of those no problem somehow.) She still needs to be swaddled for naps but not usually for night time which is really strange.

Our pediatrician also felt that if they did manage to roll without the use of their arms, which is difficult, they would know enough to turn their heads to one side instead of keeping them face down in the mattress. I don't know about your LOs but mine can lift her head while on her stomach while keeping her arms at her sides. (I call it her superwoman pose, too cute). She said that it is recommended you start to break them of the habit at 5 months and hopefully by 6 months they are swaddle free.

We still swaddle DD if she's having a fussy night and it always does the trick, other than that we just use a sleep sack.
