Understanding time - and when to and not get out of bed

We're having a hard time with DD1, waking up at 5:00 (or earlier), thinking she's napped forever, but it's only been 2 minutes, etc.

A year or so ago, we bought her a clock that turned green when it was wakeup time and she wasn't allowed out of her room before it turned green - and it broke. She clearly played with it as a toy and didn't really get the whole time thing, but we think she's ready now and is more mature, plus now that she knows her numbers, it will help with teaching her to tell time.

Anyone have a clock they use/like?  Just open to suggestions.

  • DS is 4.5 and we have been using a stoplight clock for the last year or so. He knows he can't knock on our door until the green light goes on. It works great.

  • We just have a clock radio in both of the kids' rooms.  When we first introduced the clock to DD, we covered up the minutes with black construction paper so she could only see the hour number.  Now she can see the whole clock.  DS still has the minutes covered and he knows he can't get out of bed until there is a 7 on his clock.

  • we have the clock that turns green when it's okay to get up in the morning, but it also has the nap timer.  took a week or so to get used to it (and the time change is ruining EVERYTHING :o) but it usually works pretty well.  nap is hit or miss, and sometimes i have to remind her she can't come out til it turns green, but most days she follows it.
