I don't plan to pay for my children's college. I think the idea is pretty crazy and contributes a lot to the entitlement mindset of this generation. College is a choice (one that I hope my children choose) and that comes with a price. I will encourage my kids to work hard in high school to receive scholarships and teach them that hard work always pays off in the end. I want them to work hard to earn college, to have to work while they're there (time management and prioritizing skills, hello!), and I want them to have the satisfaction of independence when they make that final loan payment (if they had to take out loans). They have to learn to make choices that will effect their entire lives - that's a skill that can't be given. That being said, as long as they're working hard I will always help (cell phone bills, car insurance, etc) and if they earn the privilege to do something exceptional like study abroad I will help too.
Amen sister! I feel the same way!
I can't imagine thnking that a persons work ethic is based on whether or not they get their college paid for. My parents paid every penny for me -- DH's parents didn't pay a single penny. Both of us have been well employed and are successful in our careers, work hard for what we have, value hard work and diligence... I'm grateful for the gift of not having to stress about paying for college, as it allowed me to have allllllllll my time to devote to my studies or the extra curriculars that helped me be successful in the business world today. DH did it differently -- went back while he already had a career -- and learned similar lessons in a different way.

What we contribute for our children will depend on our financial situation and the child's needs, but we plan to raise them their whole lives with responsibility and part time jobs and obligations, so I don't really see college funding as the big "hinge moment" of whether a kid becomes a productive member of society or not.  For all we know, he might not go to college and could be the next Warren Buffet anyway. :-)

A little bit, yeah. Reminds me of the times when March '13 would lurk and read our UO thread every week because they never had any really controversial opinions (not that this board gets very crazy though).

  • I'm with @clandestinex on the gun issue. If someone comes on to my property and threatens my family I'll be damned if I don't defend myself the best way I know how. With that being said, I think that all gunowners should have to store their weapons preoperly, handle them safely, and most importantly - know how to use them correctly. If you aren't comfortable with firearms you shouldn't have them. There's nothing worse than keeping a weapon when you aren't comfortable with it, don't know how to use it, and have zero intention of using it if you absolutely have to. Either way, the constitution's Right to Bear Arms is not about defending ourselves from each other. It is about defending ourselves from a tyranical government. If you read the Bill of Rights as a whole (at least from my interpretation) this intent is pretty clear.

There are obviously issues that need to be resolved but to take them away completely is not the answer.

And seriously, red starburts?? Perhaps we should split a bag. I'll take the delicious pinks and oranges and you can have the red nonsense.

I loved not knowing he gender of both my kids. It was the most amazing experience when they were born and I wouldn't trade it for anything. We had so much neutral stuff with ds1 that we didn't need a darn thing when ds2 was born. Plus, at my shower I got the stuff I really needed instead of a bunch of clothes that people usually get when they know the gender because they think it's cute. My UO is that I don't get cross fit. I don't know if its nationwide, but here in NY it's pretty popular and I feel like it's very extreme for no reason. My sister and brother in law are almost obsessed and I think it seems unhealthy.

This is a GREAT point. Even though we knew the gender, I asked my family to not do a gender specific invitation in hopes people would buy essential. Total fail. They didn't listen - I got TONS of clothes (including my mother in laws gift - 6 outfits, 5 of which were returned).....but didn't get most of my big ticket items like a high chair, glider, car seat - all of which was on my registry.

Another UO - I hate when people give clothes as a shower gift. With all that you need - I feel it's completely impractical.
