Twins- One Sac

Hello all! I went for my first ultrasound Monday and we discovered that we are having twins! The doctor seems to think they are in one sac. Of course I have turned to Google for more information and I've managed to freak myself out. Does anyone have any experience with twins in one sac?

Re: Twins- One Sac

  • Congratulations!  It is probably very early and a later US may very well find a membrane between the babies.  Did they see two placentas?  The terminology for twins who share a sac and placenta are mono/mono (mo/mo).  If there are two sacs and two placentas the term is di/di.  There are many helpful women on this board who have experience with both (and the third type mo/di.)

D & L are here at 34 weeks 4 days by vaginal and breech delivery on 11/19/2013
Two healthy boys weighing 4 lbs 15 ozs and 4 lbs 5 ozs.  Only 6 days in the NICU and getting bigger, stronger and cuter every day!

How far are you? At 6 and 7 weeks our Ob could not see membrane separating our id twins. At 12 weeks at the mfm we saw that thin wispy line separating them. Mo/di. It's so hard to see early. Gl and don't worry!

  • If you had a early u/s it's too soon for your Dr. to diagnose them with as one amniotic sac (mo/mo).  Good luck!  There's been many on here that were told that and they later found a dividing membrane.  Mo/mo is rare but it's definitely possible to have a good outcome, just riskier and more monitoring.
  • My boys are mo/di, 1 sac, 1 placenta with a membrane in between.  Take it one day and one appointment at a time.  Take care of yourself and try not to read too much.  We made it to 34 weeks with no complications and had very healthy 5 lb dudes who are now 25 lb 10 month olds.

  • mine share a placenta but each have their own amniotic sac separated by a thin membrane.  (are mono/di)

they are higher risk but you will be monitored closely and most pregnancies turn out very well!  congratulations!
