For those in Speech Therapy

I posted last week about language development and you all calmed any worries I had.  My question is more one of curiosity and to make sure I am doing things "right" as a FTM.  My son is saying a few words and has great receptive language.  I was wondering what kinds of things they have you do in speech therapy to help the LO's start to talk.  DS seems content not talking even though he can and is starting to mimic us a bit more but I was wondering what things I could do to help him along at his own pace.  I already say things as I am doing them (here is your red cup or get the blue ball) and try to say words slowly. Is that right? I've never done this before obviously so I just want to make sure I'm not goofing up!

Thank you :-)

Re: For those in Speech Therapy

  • We just started therapy through EI yesterday. It's all play based. We're working on getting J to indicate his desires by signing (more, water, eat, etc) and start saying words. She reall emphasized the beginning of words we're working on like, "Would you like the ball? Ba ba ball?" And trying to get him to watch her lips and mimic the ba ba sound. We realized we have really been giving in to his desires and just giving him what we know he wants without asking for it. For us that's because his twin is SO verbal and its easy to just give J water when S asks for some. So for us part of J's speech delay might just be that he hasn't needed to speak so he doesn't. Our SLP encouraged us to make lots of funny faces in the mirror with him and really emphasize the noises attached like, "Ohhhhh", "Ahhhh", "Ewwwww" trying to get him to mimic and move his mouth in similar ways.

  • Thanks guys. Didn't mean to post and run but ds got a cold so I was distracted. I have to start making him use his words more. He stopped saying or signing more because we just gave it to him. I'll try these tips. Thank you!
