Baby measuring small

I'm a FTM 26 week pregnant with di-di twins. At my growth u/s today, baby A measured in the 8th percentile (baby B is in the 30th) for size. The doctor said the range of normal is anywhere from 10th to 90th percentile. Any insight and/or advice on how to plump the little guys up?

Re: Baby measuring small

  • Both of my girls (also di/di twins) are measuring below the 10th percentile. You can try loading up on protein, but whether or not that will help really depends on why your babies are small. My doctor recommended I drink 2-3 Ensure shakes per day, but it was kind of a long shot as to if it would help. In my case, the girls are small because their placentas are not functioning correctly. My doctors believe it is because I have preeclampsia, but there are hundreds if reasons a placenta might not function normally. According to my doctor, placenta issues account for most babies with an IUGR diagnosis. I keep asking my doctor if there is more I can do to help them grow, and I have been told over and over that there really is nothing. Good luck, I hope your smaller twin has a growth spurt soon and the IUGR reverses itself!

  • Did you have an appointment with your MFM afterwards or did you only speak to the radiologist? Is there concern for the discordance in growth or only that one baby is measuring small?

This exactly it depends a lot on why they are small. I'm being induced at 34 weeks (8 days away) because B has placenta issues and as my MFM told me it's unexplainably shutting down. and has since week 26. I have been on HBR for a while now and no matter how much protine and calories I intake he still won't grow. Mine are both a little small. baby A is 4 pounds and B is just making the 3 pound mark and is very IUGR ( I think he's in the 2% now so very tiny) So I would ask why they think their is a discordance and take it from there. Thoughts and prayers for your little ones! Sometimes they will just fatten up on their own but high protien can help :)

  • xladybassx, how far along are you? I hope that your girls hang in there a little (or a lot, depending in how far along you are) longer.

I did have an appointment with my MFM immediately afterward. They had checked the placenta and blood flow during the u/s and didn't note anything out of the ordinary. At my last u/s, they were both on track and within a day of one another growth-wise. So I guess they monitor again in three weeks and then consider taking them, if necessary. They're not worried about the differential; just that A is below the average.

melissa, good luck with your delivery!! Hopefully once he gets on the outside, he'll beef up quickly!
