Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Sooo lost on this feeding thing!

So, I do understand that food at this age (my lo is 51/2 months) is for fun and whatnot, but the amount of confusing information has my head spinning. At this point I have tried rice cereal for four days in the morning and he loved it, almost took down the whole bowl (1tbsp. Cereal mixed with a little formula) I did try oatmeal but he didn't seem to like it, but like the rice I will try again. Sooo my question is this: once I've gone thru the cereals and start trying the stage 1 veggies, can I continue to do cereal for breakfast then do the veggie at lunch and then once I'm thru those go thru fruit and then I can mix fruit with cereal so on and so forth? I'm going to buy the baby bullet and I'm hoping there is some sort of guideline in one of the books that come with it, I've also been looking at the wholesome food site. I guess since I am a instruction freak and well babies don't come with them I'm looking for some close to clear cut help! Thank you and sorry for the length!

  • It is my understanding that once your LO has tried a food and tolerated it, they can eat it in rotation with other foods. Like start mixing the foods they've already tried, etc. :)

I haven't started solids yet but plan on it in a couple weeks. From what I've been reading you should feed your baby a bottle or breastfeed first and then offer solids until your LO gets older. Like you said it's more for fun and not the main source of nutrients for them right now. Just like the others have said once you know he's not allergic to a certain food you can start to mix them. Personally I wouldn't keep giving rice cereal I would just continue with fruits and veggies. You can always ask your pedi at your LO's 6 month checkup since it's coming up soon. I know you said you have looked at the wholesome food website, but keep checking it out because there is a lot of useful info on it.

  • There are very few rules and you already know the biggie - watching for allergies by giving one food for several days.  Like another poster said, once they've had something a few times, it can be "in the rotation."  Personally, I don't think you need to keep up cereal.  It's a good introductory food in that it's bland but it offers little nutritionally.  A lot of babies aren't ready for multiple meals a day at first and I don't like to mix cereals with a new food.  I want him to taste the food as it is - cereal makes it very bland tasting and with my first, I found adding the cereal turned him off on things that he liked plain.

  • My lo is 4 months and the doctor started her on solids we did a week of rice cereal, and now a week of half an ice cube of carrots twice a day mixed with the rice cereal. the doctor said when introducing a new food at least 3-5 days to know if they can tolerate it. I make my own baby food using the bullet all you have to do is get organic carrots or whatever vegetable and steam it then put it in the bullet it is so easy. I recommend using an ice cube tray and just putting it there easy to clean and easy to measure and less wasteful. Good luck

  • Thank you everyone! I'm going to get the baby bullet and use their information, but this feeding them two times a day confused me, I just figured I would go thru the stage one veggies then fruits to see what he could tolerate then rotate them or do fruit with cereal in the morning then veggie in the afternoon. I'll see what the bullet info says and hopefully it can lay something out.
  • We started off with cereal and once he got the hang of that twice a day we started with veggies at dinner time. He's had sweet potatoes, avocado, peas and carrots (I make my own and you don't need the baby bullet. A regular food processor or blender does exactly the same). Now we started a little bit of fruit in the morning. He's had bananas and today was first day of pears. I always mix in a little breast milk and cereal. We bought fortified organic oatmeal which gives him the iron he needs. He also has severe reflux so the cereal helps with stomach acid. He gets one ice cube of fruit with cereal in the morning and one ice cube with cereal at dinner time. Both times are after a normal BM bottle. At 6 months we will start some meat blended with veggies and some finger foods like peas, yogurt puffs, Cheerios etc.
  • That's a good idea Emmy, are doing a fruit in the am then a veggie in the pm?
  • This is what I do...I did oatmeal until DD got the hang of it then tried a veggie & swapped oatmeal off with the veggie for 3 days then introduce another veggie or fruit.
Then you can mix fruits, veggies, rice & or oatmeal.
I make all my baby food with my food processor. I Google different recipes but mainly I follow WWW.wholesomebabyfood.com. she's got some great stuff & helps break it down for you.

  • Yes. Fruit mixed into his oatmeal usually around 930-10. He's already had two bottles by this point (6 and 9). Then veggie with a little cereal around 530-6. It's when DH comes home so he gets to feed him once. Then his last bottle around 630-7 then bed. I make bigger batches of food and freeze it in ice cube trays. Except avocado and bananas. Avocados never last long so when I feed it to him I use the rest in a meal for myself or some guacamole. For a banana I just mash up about 1/4 to 1/3 of a banana then eat the rest myself.
  • These are great answers!

this! I used this website religiously when DD was itty bitty.

her fav was the banana-cado (banana and avocado mixed) with a little rice cereal. She would devour it!

also yes, once LO can tolerate the food (no reactions) you are introducing you can absolutely mix it with other things- we mixed a lot! plums and pears. apples and banana, green beans and squash, apples mixed well with a lot of veggies.

I had a baby bullet and broke it after a couple months. The blades are okay. If you have a food processor or a blender it may work better than the baby bullet. The only thing I really liked were the containers that came with it (that you can buy separate, if you want) I'd use those and Tupperware.

Take it one day at a time. LO is growing and eating well it sounds like. I know it's a lot of new information to take in. But you got this! :) have fun with it. I miss that age where DD was eager to try things. Now, not so much! haha
  • My girl is 5 1/2 months and loves cereal for breakfast and carrots for dinner!
  • His19 thank you! After reading these responses I'm feeling a lot better!
