hitting self

Does anyone else have a hitter on their hands? DD has started to hit her head with her hand occasionally.  She has hit her younger sister a couple of times and when I sternly say "No hitting" she will hit herself in the head.  If I tell her "No hitting" when she does it to herself it just seems to get worse, so I try to ignore it.  Any suggestions?  With her being so young to have a little sister I think she is doing it out of frustration when I can't help her immediately with something like if I am nursing Emerson, etc.

Re: hitting self

  • Same as Kimmer.  About a month ago LO was hitting herself in the head all the time.  H and I would tell her that hitting hurt but she would smile and keep doing it.  We finally started ignoring it and a week or so later she stopped doing it. I think that giving her a response/reaction only feed into the hitting.  My LO would do it randomly like when she was nursing, sitting in her highchair eating, or just walking around the house.  In her case I think she was just learning cause and effect and experimenting with her actions as she was not angry or upset.  It sounds like your LO may be doing it more out of frustration though.
