Parenting after a Loss

Swaddling? (Julymomma)

Sorry to be a PW, but figured I'd ask you ladies about this, too :)

We swaddle DS2.. actually, we swaddled DS1, too, but around 3 months he stopped needing it.. he'd break out every single time, but then would continue staying asleep, so "stopping" wasn't an issue.  DS2 on the other hand NEEDS the swaddle still.  He will sleep 12-13 hours at night while swaddled.  We've been trying to swaddle him with one arm out, and he's "okay" with doing that, but will wake himself up periodically from smacking himself in the face (thanks, morro reflex).. I know the morro reflex should stop by 4 months, but we're a week shy of that and it's still definitely an issue!  He is becoming so heavily relied on the swaddle that I have no idea how I'm going to break it!  He's swaddled at bedtime and naps.. we've tried no swaddle or just swaddling his torso leaving both arms out and both of those options were disastrous (and we've tried more than once).. when did you stop swaddling and how did you "wean" off of it??  I plan to discuss this with my Ped at his 4 month appointment, too, but just curious for tips/advice in advance :)  Thanks!

  • We swaddled until 6 1/2 months.  She was comfortable, wouldn't break out, and didn't roll at night.  I didn't see a reason to stop.  The minute she rolled at night, we stopped.  Our biggest hurdle was just keeping her warm, but I went out and bought a sleep sack, and it was easy peasy.  She'd have her evening bottle, I'd put her up on my shoulder for burping and rocking, then lay her down on her back.  She'd stay like that for maybe 30 seconds, roll over onto her tummy and be asleep the rest of the night.

We stopped sometime between 3 and 4 months. A was constantly breaking out of his swaddles (we hadn't gotten around to getting any of velcro kind).  I started putting him back to bed after his last overnight feeding (around 4am) swaddled with arms out when he was all milk drunk and sleepy.  We continued to swaddle when he went down to bed, though.  Within a few weeks, we transitioned to swaddle with arms out at the beginning of the night.  For us, it was a pretty easy transition and coincided with A wanting to move/roll in bed.  He's a big fan of sleeping on his side, so with the arms out, he could roll himself into that position (though he'd usually end up on his back once he fell into a deep sleep).

  • We don't until they break out every time. We use the Escape Proof Swaddle method (YouTube). I thought we had to quit with DD1 as soon as she rolled back to belly even though she never tried in her crib. That was at 4m and it was a disaster. Pedi said she wasn't ready so we tried breaking her again at 5m. It took her a long time to fall asleep but otherwise it was fine. She didn't sleep very long stretches for a couple weeks and then it was back to normal. We will wait until DD2 is ready as well.
