Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

3 doctors later....

I turn now to my bumpies.......We've been to 3 doctors and they have not been able to find a problem.

My daughter (1year 3 months) has had a fever for the last 2 weeks.  She wakes up fine she'll eat a bit, but when it's time for her nap she sleeps and when she wakes up she's miserable.  She will wake up with fevers that are 101-102 from that point on it's down hill.  She's coughing - mucus cough and coughs until she literally runs out of breath or throws up.  We give her tylenol and ibuprophen and that works for awhile then we are back to square one.  Again at night she gets so hot that it feels like the bed has a heating pad on it.

Please help if you've had or known someone that has had these symptoms.......at this point we are desperate because dr's have been unable to find anything wrong with her.

  • Sorry, I can't relate.  Poor thing must be miserable.  My LO was like this for about three days and then bam, the rash but her fever broke.  Good luck.

What about a UTI?  I remember a LO from my BMB had an unexplained fever for a week or two.  The doctor finally figured out it was from a UTI.
ETA:I just saw that she is coughing and has lots of mucous.  Did they rule out pneumonia?
  • thank you all for your responses....they have checked her for ear infections and pneumonia.  Today she was fine up until about 10 mins ago when her temp was at 100.3.

I am on my way once again to the urgent care, but I will bring up the possiblity of an UTI.

This is so hard on my husband and I seeing her go through this :(

  • I agree with a UTI. Have her cognitive functions or balance been off?
  • Take her to a pediatric ER. There are multiple possibilities it could be. If any kid has a fever for more than 5 days straight, it needs investigation for more serious and dangerous causes. Coughing until she vomits is classic for pertussis, ie whooping cough. There doesn't need to be a "whoop" in young kids.
  • Also if you've seen your PCP already (not just random urgent care people) get a new one. This is Pediatrics 101.
