Cutting nails

My LO pretty much doesn't fall asleep nursing anymore. Now I don't have a chance to cut his nails!! When do you do it? I gave him a little cut once when I cut them while he was awake (it wasn't that bad - he actually didn't even notice) so now I'm nervous! My DH suggested I sneak in and cut them while he's sleeping lol.

Re: Cutting nails

  • I still do it while she is sleeping. It's easier if we were out and she is asleep in her car seat, but I sneak in and do it in her crib if I have to lol

  • I do it while she's in her bouncer. She's so interested in what I'm doing she just stares and smiles lol.

  • I used to do it when he was asleep in my arms but lately Ill just sit him in my lap facing out and do it that way. Sometimes he'll move around but I am able to get them clipped. I swear I have to do it like twice a week his nails grow so fast!
  • I sit him on my lap facing out and do it. He tries to grab the clippers but I can get em done in between grabs. I have started using the regular clipper because the dumb safety thing on the baby ones didn't let me see the nail and I clipped more skin than I would with the big ones.

  • I try to do it when she's napping, but she's such a light sleeper most of the time that as soon as I lift her hand up to trim her nails she wakes up. So now we've resorted to tag teaming her. When she's eating DH cuts her nails.

I sit her on my lap facing out when she is ready to be less active. We practice counting while we are doing it. She is fairly interested in watching as long as I don't take too long. If she is too wiggly though, then I have to break it up into a couple different times.

Several people have also recommended @AllieAGame 's way to me, too.
  • Yhea I just suck it up and do it, I have to do it usually twice a week since they grow so fast.

He is pretty used to it now so he lets me with little fuss, I have the best luck doing it on his changing table though while he is laying on his back.

  • I nurse LO on the weekends before putting him down for a nap and he usually gets drowsy or falls asleep so I do it then.

  • I always had to do it while she was asleep, but recently she's been letting me do it while she's awake. I just have to hold on tight to that little hand but she doesn't fuss about it. I do it while she's in her high chair because she's more restrained in there. It's also a good place to clip her toenails.

  • If I tried doing it when she was sleeping she would wake up for sure. I just do it after a bath. It's never a big deal.

I do DS's the same way I do my cats'.  Hear me out.  I hold him tight, speak calmly to him, and clip as fast as I can.  I'm pretty good at it, if I do say so myself.  He pretty much grows talons if I don't clip them about two times a week.

How dare you treat your baby like a cat!!!1!!!11

;) I do the same thing. Hold that hand tight and cut quick. I also pin his opposite shoulder back with my chin so he can't grab with that hand. Then he usually begins trying to eat my cheek. So it's a win win.

  • I cut my twins nails while they are nursing. They are so intent on eating that they don't usually mind.
  • Okay so I saw this post and decided to check out DS's nails since it had been awhile since I had clipped them. They looked a little long so I decided to clip them. (He was awake but fairly calm.) I finished his nails and brought him over to his activity gym to play. 5 minutes later I glance at him and there is blood everwhere! I started to panic until I remembered I had just clipped his nails. I checked them all and I nicked his pinky. DS didn't even notice until I had to apply pressure and then of course he got mad. I couldn't get the bleeding to stop so I had to put a bandaid on it. Then I just finished spending half an hour getting the blood out of everything. He got it on his mat, his bib,his onesie, his pants, and three toys. Sigh.

I kind of blame you guys. Just kidding.....sort of. :P

  • We do it when he is sitting up in a bumbo or highchair and in between bites. Or on DH's lap.

But I want to say the the nail scissors (little yellow ones mentioned above) are 9 million times easier than the clippers.

  • yesterday, I did it when he was in the bouncer.  I put the bouncer up against the wall though so he can't bounce.

  • I used to only be able to cut his nails while he was sleeping. Now I can clip them when he's awake and on the diaper table. He stays
Still while I clip and make funny faces.

  • I'm the odd mom out- I file his nails. So much easier and I can get them pretty short without fear of cutting.

  • I do it right when she gets up from a nap in that still dreamy phase

And then after he's done, I give him a treat from the jar and a good brushing.

If only you could litter box train him. ;)

  • I also sit him on my lap facing out. He does pretty well and likes to watch.
  • I could only use the little yellow scissors when he slept heavily. Now, he pulls too much and freaks me out with the scissors so I bought a pair of tiny nail clippers and work on them a little here, a little there, when he's distracted by other things.
