Preemies

Sudden reflux?

I know many preemie moms deal with reflux from day one, but did anyone's LO start months later? My daughters now 11 weeks (born at 34) and has suddenly been spitting up like crazy the past two days. She's visibly uncomfortable and super cranky. i feel so bad for her. She's formula fed but we haven't changed that or her bottles. I have a pedi appt tomorrow but thought I'd see if anyone else experienced this.

Re: Sudden reflux?

  • We had this exactly. She was in NICU for nine weeks (she's a 30-weeker) and sll of a sudden once we came home we saw it. We'd feed her and hunker down for an hour or so of fussiness and obvious discomfort. Dr prescribed Zantac and 1tsp rice cereal per ounce of formula. Has made a world of difference! Good luck!

  • Thanks - it's amazing to me how things can just come out of nowhere! A friend of mine said it might be teething but I can't imagine that's it this early.
  • Anna's got a little worse as she became more active. Before your appointment tomorrow, try holding her up right for 20 minutes after she eats and put her to sleep on a slant if you can, for example in the rock n play. Also be sure you are burping her often, every ounce.

  • I think my twins have developed this too. They don't always spit up but are so uncomfortable after eating. It is making nighttime feedings such a long ordeal. Our pediatrician said he doesn't want to medicate them.

  • My boy was born at 34 weeks and spent 2 weeks in the NICU.  He has seemed to have reflux since about 6 weeks.  The dr. prescribed Zantac and then Axid...neither has worked.  We have now been doing the rice cereal for a good week.  Still waiting for results :(
  • Thanks for all of the advice. No idea how this is related but girl had two massive blowout diapers and seems to be back to herself! No more spit up and eating like a champ.
  • Oh goodness. Yay for poop!!! Let's hope that's all it was. If not, Zantac has worked wonders for us. They did the cereal in the NICU and it made him super constipated. Not fun!

  • We're doing Zantac but I really wish they'd let her stop Neosure.  Its harsh on her stomach, but right now they want her to keep drinking it.

@conradtn--have you asked about enfamil enfacare? We made the switch after neosure seemed to hurt her tummy. We're still on the Zantac, but the enfamil still made a difference. Our pedi didn't mind the switch since it was still preemie formula.
  • My LO first had signs of reflux around the same time. He's on meds now and they seem to help... But pedi said reflux can start out of nowhere due to stomach maturity and producing higher acid amounts.

Actually went yesterday to the pediatrician (because she's been miserable) and they put her on Enfamile Gentlease, and switched her to Previcid.

    My Wonder Woman!

  • I don't think we suspected reflux until about a month after she came home.  I recall in the NICU when our 32-weeker was about to come home, she massively spit up on me, but that wasn't super common.  We brought her home when she was only 34 weeks, and she ate the minimum they told us was allowed at first, so she wasn't taking in much, and she also couldn't really cry.  About 38 weeks, she could eat more and cry loudly, and we knew she was in pain because of her back arching and frequent crying.  The major spitting up didn't come until long after her reflux meds were prescribed--we needed towels etc. in great quantity probably about 1 month after her due date.  We started on Zantac, and that helped some, but moved up to Prevacid, which helped more.  We did not need a huge dose.  Prevacid did not work for about 2 weeks--it takes time to start working--and we stayed on Zantac during that time.  At around 7 months actual, she was sitting up all the time and started solids, and she mostly quit with the spitting up and we stopped the Prevacid.  She still occasionally throws up a little bit of either milk or solids, but it doesn't seem to bother her much.

As far as constipation, we hated Enfacare.  I wish we would have known that was the problem and quit sooner.  As soon as we went to regular formula, we were fine.
