March 2014 Moms

What are you doing for window coverings in your nursery?

I am debating between blackout curtains (cheaper) or blackout blinds, which are way more money..

Thoughts?

Congrats to my TTC buddy Madeline! Cheering for all the strong 3T ladies!

Re: What are you doing for window coverings in your nursery?

  • We have good blackout blinds that came with the house.  It just doesn't cover the very edges.  We are getting a valance and curtains to cover the edges, which is what we did in our master bedroom.

RIP Dr. Irving Fishman - 10/1/19-7/25/10 - thank you for holding on for me.

  • I used inexpensive roller black out shades from JCPenny. No cord, so they are nursery safe. I have regular curtains hanging along the sides.

It's not perfect because we still get some light around the edges but it cuts the daylight down by at least 80-90%.

  • Probably sticking with the metal mini blinds already in there unless we decide they aren't working out after the baby arrives.

  • We have blackout honeycomb blinds and curtains

  • We have wood blinds with black out curtains. Works pretty well..
  • Hunter Douglas up-down black out blinds.. We have them in every bedroom.  AWESOME

I bought these to replace the corded mini blinds: https://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/store/product/white-chatham-cellular-cordless-shade/124684?Keyword=room+darkening I've had these in our bedroom for about a year already and they're really effective at darkening the room, and insulating for heat/cool. With 20% off coupons I spent less than $100 on a pair.
  • Just a word from someone who has purchased blackout curtains before--the "blackout" curtains are sometimes not always "blackout". We have some in our bedroom that are brown and they basically just reduce the brightness of the sun...kind of like a filter. However, the ones we have in the living room are black and they are also blackout curtains, and they legitimately stop all of the light from coming in. I haven't even gotten close to thinking about the window treatments in our nursery yet...I think DH just tossed all the old blinds that we used to have, so it will definitely have to be something on my list to think of!

  • We got black out curtains from Bed Bath and Beyond for dd. Behind them we have a honeycomb shade that came with the house. We love the curtains and will get another set for this child also.

  • We have wood blinds in the room now, so I'm having DH add a cornice above the window and I'm going to put some sheers in as well just for decoration. Babies room is on the west side of our house, so sunrises won't wake it up, I'm not too worried about getting black out shade for the room.
  • I'm trying to find coral blackout curtains. Apparently I'm the only one because I can't find any anywhere.

Good luck finding coral curtains in general! It took me months to find some..at target and I had to have a friend in another state buy and ship to me! We are having curtains custom made for the nursery.

We've got mini blinds and I'm getting curtains made from this fabric for decoration.

  • We have plantation shutters and then cream curtains over them. The nursery isn't on a sunny side of the house so it stays pretty dark. With DS' room I just bought regular blue curtains and then this white thick blackout curtain to put behind it. I just pinned them together, it was inexpensive and stay VERY dark!

  • Aluminum foil and duct tape!!! Oh yeah red neck style 8-}

  • We threw up mini blinds when we moved in just to have them covered, but when DD2 started waking up at 4:45 every single morning I had my mom sew curtains with black out liners for both of our kids' rooms. Those doubled with the blinds keep it nice and dark in there.

  • I just have some thick slatted wood blinds and blackout valance.  I didn't want long drapes, it cutes enough light that its not an issue.

  • We just have curtains. They dilute the light but you can still see your way around. Haven't made up my mind if blackout curtains are a must have.

Can more people post links to where they bought their curtains?

I went on a big blackout curtain search a few years ago while I was working night shift and came up with NOTHING. Need help.

  • List of things I just learned I don't know (discovered via this thread):

-What is a mini-blind? How is this different from a blind?
-How does one hang a valence? Does it require a second curtain rod?
-What is madras other than a curry?
-How does everyone know these things besides me?

  • Curtains?  I am going to be lucky if MH gets the new windows installed.
  • We had just a valance...but ended up getting blackout curtains..it worked really well for us!! Just keeps the room as dark as possible. It's not exactly the cutest, but works well!

  • I've been looking at black out curtains. And every time I buy curtains. I feel so ripped off that they are sold per pannel. To me this is like selling one shoe. Ha I don't know maybe I'm totally alone on this one.
  • Maybe this is a dumb question, but are blackout curtains/blinds necessary? This wasn't even on my radar.

  • Right now I have regular panel curtains but I think I'm going to sew I'm some blackout lines underneath. I plan to get some kind of blinds I'm thinking the faux wood or bamboo.
  • dd room has the 'blackout' curtains in a light pink. the def don't make it blackout dark in there, more so just dims it in there. its not too big of deal for her.

for the new nursery we are doing a hunting lodge/woodsy theme so dd is making shutters/barn doors for the giant window and an sheet metal awning on top. I am pretty excited about it

  • I have blackout curtains for DS's room. Blinds don't really work in our windows.
LO's room has one window in her future room (DS's has two) so it's a lot darker. I'm planning on using regular white panels. If the room ends up not being dark enough as she gets older than I'll just buy blackouts.

    This.

Yeah, this for me too. I'd be worried my baby would get used to sleeping in a dark rook only.

To fancy for my aluminum foil and duct tape design!
