potty accidents

DD is 3.5 and has been fully potty trained since April. She does not have accidents. In the past week or so, she has had accidents almost every day, sometimes even twice a day. It has happened at school a few times and even at home where the potty is very accessible to her.  There have been no changes in our household recently, and I haven't seen any attitude changes in her either. It seems like she is just trying to hold it until the last minute, and if the potty isn't right there, she has an accident. Any thoughts? I was thinking about doing a reward chart where she gets certain things if she goes so many days with an accident. Does this sound like a good idea? Could something else be going on?

Thanks for any input!

Re: potty accidents

  • take her to the pedi. My DD (4.5) was doing that over the summer and she had a UTI.
"Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies. God damn it, you've got to be kind." - Kurt Vonnegut
  • She could be holding it if it hurts to pee. Can she communicate if she is in pain?

  • Thank you guys.

I ran into my neighbor today at the kids hair salon and I asked her about it. She said she might just be having to much fun to stop and go potty... and then there isn't enough time to get to the potty. She said to go back to basics, and make sure she is going potty every 2 hours or so, and if she is still having accidents, then to bring her in to get tested for a UTI.

  • I've gone through potty regressions like this with both DD1 and DD2. Neither ever complained that it hurt to go. I really think they just got too busy and didn't feel like stopping what they were doing. What's helped lately with DD2 is the Daniel Tiger (PBS) episode where Daniel stops playing to go use the potty. We sing that song all the time to encourage DD2 to stop and go.
