Pre-School and Daycare

Sleep s/o

With my DD right now (the one who turns 5 in Jan) we try a nap every day. Some days she sleeps, some she just has some "quiet time." But, I think the nap might be messing her up at night, even when she needs it. I am thinking we just stop trying to have her nap at all.

If your child doesn't nap and is about 5 years old, do you still do "quiet time" for a bit or do you just let them stay up and play? She's the eldest so the other ones nap.

Thanks.

Re: Sleep s/o

  • Usually DS does some chilling out time but it's not alone time in his room as I have heard is popular. DH usually reads books with him (DS could read every book we have like daily-- he loves sitting on the couch for books), or they might watch a show. All in all, about a total hour of that. DD naps most of the time so it's nice 1-1 time for DH and DS (or on the weekend DS and I) while she takes a snooze.

  • DD is 3 1/2 and doesn't at home but does at daycare.  We're usually out and about so I don't do any specific quite time.  When we're home and DS is sleeping sometimes she'll be playing with toys or coloring, so I guess that would be quite time, but I also try to use that time to do something she can't do when DS is up because he'll mess it up or eat it, like paint, markers, play dough, cook.

  • Thanks. I have noticed that when I am home and she isn't napping, it is nice to have a little time together without the littles.

  • I usually let her watch a DVD for an hour, and then she'll draw or we'll play a game or she'll help me bake something. I can't put her in her room for quiet time because she's really noisy (even when she thinks she's being quiet), and she and DD2 share a wall.
  • Yes, he has to stay in his room for an hour. He will be 5 in March. 4 days a week he is in PM preschool, so no quiet times on those days.

  • We are kind of in the same place as you now.  We are still sending DD to spend quiet time in her room after lunch in hopes that she will nap (because she is still visibly tired by then and always gets cranky by dinnertime) but she will actually sleep maybe one time out of 20, if that.  I'm about to throw in the towel and just use that time as one-on-one quiet time to play a game or work on a project together.  I'm reluctant to give up the kid-free time to clean the house, etc. but I guess she could do something on her own for part of that time without being in her room at this point.

  • My kids find something to play with either independently or together depending on who is home from school (they are 7, 5, and 4)

  • Yes. If we're home he has quiet time in his room. He can play but has to stay in his room for so e downtime. On rare occasions he may fall asleep. He'll be 5 in June.
  • Yes we do an hr of quiet time
