Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Eliminiating all bottles

So far, we've cut all of DD's bottles, except for the one right before bed.  We were cutting one bottle out a week, and were planning to get rid of the nighttime bottle this weekend but she was sick and we didn't want to make any changes while she wasn't feeling well.

She never seems to finish it anymore.  Usually after her meal and her milk at dinner, she only wants 3 or so oz of the bottle anyway.  Just wondering if we should just cut it.  I cant remember when they really want them to be off the bottle by.

Re: Eliminiating all bottles

  • We make Sundays a special lazy day and Eva (17mnts) gets a bottle in the am.  She still nurses first thing in morning, and about every other night before bed

  • My doctor likes babies off bottles by 15 mo. We had DS down to one nighttime bottle of WCM just before 14 mo. He'd been acting less and less interested in the bottles, so one night I put his warm milk in a soft-spout sippy cup instead, and that was the end of bottles for us. It was almost too easy.

  • We stopped cold turkey at 13 months. DD didn't seem to mind.

I personally wanted the bottles gone ASAP so we threw them all away when DS turned 1. I still gave DS a sippy cup of milk before bed up until he was about 16 months old but I made sure to brush his teeth afterward. Do what you are comfortable with.

We cut out bottles when DS turned one as well. It wasn't a hard transition for him at all. I agree that if you feel it's time to get rid of them, then I'd give it a shot.
