Job Searching

I'm ready to get back to work (more than ready--I miss it!).  One problem--I suck at finding jobs to apply for.  Any advice on effective searching?  Part of my issue is that the fields I have the most experience in--museum work and academic institutions--are really limited in my area (we moved shortly before having DD) and many positions will ask for an advanced degree that I don't have (obtaining one is a possibility for the future, but of course that doesn't really help right now).  Aside from trolling monster.com and the like, any advice or tactics for scrounging something up?  S12ers have the smart, I know you've thought of things I haven't!

Re: Job Searching

  • I find just getting the word out there helps....like if DH is chatting with coworkers, you're chatting with friends, etc just throwing out that you're looking for work in such and such an area might network you with people. All the jobs I've gotten I found out about because someone knew I was job hunting. GL!

  • Are there any placement companies near you? I liked giving my resume and experiences to someone else to have them find me a job.

  • It can also help to find places in your area that you would like to work at, give them a call to see if they're hiring, and ask if they will keep your resume on file in the event that something comes up in the future.

  • Have you done the normal searches like going to the museum/academic institutions website and looking for open jobs? I usually go to indeed.com first. You can always check city, county, state websites too.

  • Are there any events you can attend that these places may sponsor so you can go and network?

  • DH has gotten his last 3 jobs by reaching out to people he knows from previous work experiences (vendor, CFO, and another vendor).

Thanks :)  Yes, I have gone to institution sites and have found a few things to apply for.  One issue with small museums is that they don't always have an employment section or list that on their sites. They'll list on websites or whatnot, but it's often not consistent (ie, always on career builder or anything like that) and it can be easy to miss.  I was considering kind of "cold calling" or emailing but wasn't sure if that was totally gauche.
