Kaiser - What to expect?

Curious if anyone is using Kaiser - Our gestational surrogate has her first OB appointment (11 weeks) tomorrow, and was wondering what to expect. Also would love to know if Kaiser does any of the Harmony or MaterniT21 blood testing. Thanks for any additional info!

Re: Kaiser - What to expect?

  • I have no info I just wanted to wish you and GS the best of luck for tomorrow.

  • @shortnstumpy Thank you! We've finally "graduated" from the RE, so a little anxious being at this step. We've had two good ultrasounds so far, so praying things still look good!
  • Kaiser covers NIPT (harmony, verifi, maternit21) if your over 35 yrs old or if you have a screen positive on the nuchal translucency ultrasound.
  • Please let me know if you have more kaiser questions :)
  • Thanks @noe2013! I wasn't sure since I'm at higher risk for genetic disorders due to being an Ashkenazi Jew. Do you know if Kaiser usually does an U/S at the first appointment?
  • The first appointment is paperwork and labwork. At least that's what they told us in our "healthy pregnancy" class.
  • The usual first appointment in Prenatal Intake is with an MA just for paperwork, choosing your OB, scheduling US, blood work and flu shot. If you've been following a RE, you may have been able to skip that step. First OB appt they will do a dating US in office, not much else. I had a separate appointment with a geneticist to discuss testing. The Verifi test was covered for me since I'm AMA. Be sure to let the OB know about your Ashkenazi heritage, and they'll likely send you to a geneticist who takes a full family history, calculates your risk & orders testing. Good luck & congrats!
  • @katebee you will fill out some paperwork asking about genetic disorders and family history and you can check certain screenings based on ethnicity I was screened for cystic fibrosis which was covered 100%. Then they assigned me a genetic counselor (sometimes you have to ask) and it was just a quick phone convo about screenings and further tests. The NT was routinely scheduled at kaiser though.
