Baby Names

Similar number of syllables/ similar feel for siblings?

I am wondering how everyone feels about sibset names. Our DDs name is Basil, and maybe its just because I am weird, but I feel like another baby (boy or girl) should also have a shorter type name. I love names like Magnolia, Clementine, Delaney, Penelope, etc, but I just feel like they seem so long an flowy and fancy compared to Basil's name and it rubs me the wrong way. Maybe because Basil's name seems more like it would be a nickname or just a simple name. I dunno...
Our top choices are Ingrid, Violet, Olive for girls, and Milo for a boy. All pretty short and simple.

Would you think it's weird to see a sibset with Basil and one of those long fancy flowy names?

Re: Similar number of syllables/ similar feel for siblings?

  • First off, I LOVE Ingrid. It was on our list. Milo is great, too.

I think that Magnolia is a little more frilly but to me Clementine works fine. It's only one extra syllable than Basil and it does seem more simple. Delaney is fine for me, too.

I understand what you're saying. I don't know if the syllables would bother me, but I do think it should feel like the same people named both children!

With Basil, I really like Ingrid. I wouldn't do Olive because then I would feel like you were going for a food theme

    ;)

ETA: I guess that would go for Clementine, too.

  • My children's names are 3,2, and 4 syllables so it isn't important to me.

I think Magnolia or Clementine would compliment Basil nicely because they are also nature-y. I wouldn't think of the length of the names at all. I also like Violet with it.

While Ingrid is lovely, it seems an odd pair with Basil to me.

  • I think you can pull off a 2-4 syllable sibling for a Basil, no problem. For me, style match matters much more. All of your names (besides Delaney) suit Basil nicely. I love Basil & Penelope. I wouldn't do Clementine though cause then you have a food theme going...

  • Sorry to have posted and run, but we went for an impromptu jog to the park before dinner.

After reading the replies, I am thinking maybe it's not actually the length of the name that bothers me, but that the styles are totally different. It's hard because Basil's name isn't really a certain "style"... except for maybe boy names as girl names, but to me it doesn't feel like a boy name on a girl since we don't pronounce it like the traditional boy name. I guess it feels like a nature name, which is probably why I like so many nature names... but other than that, it doesn't really fit anywhere so I feel like a lot of names I love sound strange with it.

  • That's why I like Ingrid... It reminds me of Basil... It's sweet and quirky
Me too. And Violet. They are short, sweet and a bit funky without being youneek. Though some say Basil's name is youneek and I don't really care. :)

I think Wren is a fine name, very cute. But one syllable names with our last name just don't work because our last name is one syllable. It's sad because I really like Jack and Max for boys but they sound choppy with our last name.

  • I'm kind of over the whole sibset thing; I still apply it on here when people are asking about names, because most of the time I don't have a strong love or hate for any of the names on someone's list, so it gives me a way to decide how to vote.

DDs' names have the same number of syllables and both end in A, but I don't think they "go" together. Monica is pretty traditional and normal; Tallulah is quirky and unusual.

I wouldn't think there was anything weird about Basil and Clementine, or any of the other names you mentioned. The difference in syllables would have to be REALLY pronounced for me to notice (like Bay and Alexandria), and even then I wouldn't think it was particularly weird.

I'd be more likely to think two names mismatched in style was weird (hypocritical of me). Basil and Ava, or Basil and Madison would make me wonder if each parent got to name a kid or something.

So I just read this! We agree!

I was going to suggest Willow, Maple and Cedar, but it just occurred to me that I think your LN is Brown. Is a tree name weird with the LN Brown? I guess that'd be up to you. I don't think it'd be a dealbreaker for me.

I am wonderig this too, if tree Brown is too weird. I like Cedar Willow and Juniper but the tree Brown think makes me wonder. But I live Violet Brown which is essentially Purple Brown. And Olive Brown which is basically green brown. And Basil is a plant (as is Violet) and so it's Plant Brown instead of Tree Brown. Which isn't any less weird. Haha! Maybe I feel like some of the names I like are weird because they are not quirky plant names. Hahaha!

  • I like Ingrid, I don't think it sounds bad with Basil

Maybe this is odd, but I think sibsets can sound better when they have different number of syllables. At least our 1st is 1 syllable, and when I play with different names in my head another 1 syllable name never sounds as good as a 2 syllable one. But that may just be because 1 syllable names can sound choppy anyway

  • My brothers are 1 and 2 syllables, I'm 4. I think they sound great together, like pp said. Somehow it flows better or something. But I agree that it's more the "feel" of the names. Loving all the nature names, especially Violet! Give her a non-color mn, and I think you're fine.

This. DH and I like the girl name Dakota but our first DD is Annabelle I felt Annabelle is feminine & flowy while Dakota is more trendy/harsher. I just CANT see this as a sibset so we chose Lillian instead. Though we did consider Clara, though shorter I feel they sound good together. So syllables alone dont' matter necessary but the 'feel' does.
