Gymboree Play & Learn at 10 weeks?

Hi Ladies,
I have heard good things about the local 'Play & Learn' classes through Gymboree.  They let you take one free class so I was thinking of doing it in two weeks when my son will be 10 weeks old.  Do you think that's too young?  The suggested age range is '0-6 mo.' but I'm just not sure if he'll even have a clue as to what's going on.  And though I am far from a germophobe with him (we go out and about quite a bit) I am also a little wary of going somewhere with such germ potential at such a young age.  He has his 2 month appointment the week prior to this where he gets a large round of shots and I am going to bring this class up with the pediatrician too.

But what do you all think?  Too young for a class OR too young to be in such a germ-potent place?

  • I personally would wait the 2 weeks after his immunizations but I tend to be over cautious. We are avoiding public places other than the pediatrician until then.

  • I used to teach play and learn classes when I was in college. I didn't teach the baby classes but from what I remember they do things like baby massages and songs. The classes are back to back and so mats and equipment get wiped down at the end of each day. The classes are expensive. I think for the price you would get more out of them when they are older. If the program is the same as when I taught there they have a new curriculum every two weeks and equipment gets changed around every two weeks.

  • Yes, too young. Save the money for when your baby is closer to a year. I was so excited to get engaged with stuff like that right from the beginning with DS1 but luckily I just did free stuff before realizing he just sat there and looked at the ceiling.

Try to find stuff in your community like moms groups, library activities, stuff set up for kids at your local parks, etc and take your baby to things like that if you're looking for stuff to do. You'll get an idea of what's out there, what kind of stuff you enjoy doing with your child and meet moms who can give you good leads on other things to do. Or go to a playground and do sensory stuff with your baby which is pretty much all they do at gymboree that early anyway.
