Babies: 9 - 12 Months

suddenly stopped thumb sucking?

My DS was a fairly avid thumb sucker from about 2 months until just a few weeks ago, when he suddenly stopped. This also coincided exactly with a 9-month wakeful period. I am sure part of the wakeful was because he was having problems self-soothing without his thumb...

Although the wakeful seems to be winding down (yay!), he still won't suck his thumb. He does put his fingers and his arm up to his mouth, but the thumb, nada.

Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this. I suppose it's made my future life a lot easier that he has self-weaned from the thumb, but I miss it -- it was so cute, and besides, it seemed to bring him a lot of comfort. He never used to cry (I mean at all), but now he cries a few times a day. Poor guy.

Re: suddenly stopped thumb sucking?

  • My son did the same thing with his paci. It used to take it all the time no issues, before bed, if we were in the car, or out on a walk it was a comfort thing for him, but then one day after his bottom 2 teeth came through (they came through at the same time) he wants nothing to do with a paci. If i give it to him, he chews on it or just throws it down.

You're right when you said you're making it easier on yourself down the road that's how i'm thinking. i know i won't have to deal with him being 2 and a paci in his mouth still. No thanks. So i'm grateful he learned that he didn't want it anymore himself. :)
I look at it as a positive thing!  :)

  • Oh my gosh, I would LOVE it if my three year old suddenly stopped sucking her fingers, wet have been working in it for ages.
