Sippy Cup Question

How did you introduce the sippy cup?  And how long did it take them to "get" it?  Any recommendations for cups to use?

Re: Sippy Cup Question

  • I introduced a straw cup around 4 months.  She had no idea what she was doing then but with the straw cup I could give it a squeeze to get liquid up the straw.  Quite the mess when she didn't know she was supposed to swallow, haha!  At 6 months though, she understood and now drinks out of the straw cup all the time.  She doesn't like to lean back for bottles so I didn't think she'd like the traditional sippy because she doesn't want to tilt it back.  For us, the straw cup is a great alternative!  We have the Playtex First Lil' Gripper Straw Trainer Cup.

Liv is just starting to figure out the sippy.  She still doesn't get the straw cup though.  We are using the Avent first sippy that I think is for 4 months and up.  She drinks out of Avent bottles and I think the top of it feels really similar so she got the hang of it a little easier.  What she really prefers is sticking one of my water bottle tops completely in her mouth...  I made the mistake of letting her take the teeniest of sips out of my water and it has started an obsession with all of our drinks, she tries to steal our cups and pop bottles constantly.  Whoops..
A is obsessed with my giant blue water bottle!  Whenever he sees it, he reaches to grab it and wants to put the sippy spout in his mouth.  I always let him, kind of hoping he might figure out how to use it, but he mostly just chews on it.
