Newborn Reflux?

I have been looking up symptoms of reflux online, and some that I identify my LO of having seem to also correspond with "normal" newborn behavior. Anyone's LO been diagnosed with reflux? Is there a treatment for this? What would my pediatrician do in order to determine whether or not this is my LO's issue?

I don't have experience with this as I'm a FTM to a 2 week old, but I brought up this same question to my pedi yesterday. Henry spits up with almost every feed and has the hiccups a couple of times a day and is sort of gassy. She said that in the hospital the babies receive a Vitamin K shot that helps with their intestinal floral. That wears off around the two week mark and babies start exhibiting those "classic" symptoms. Basically she said that unless he is projectile vomiting Exorsist style or if the spit up is bright yellow/green bile, not to worry about reflux or GERD or anything else like that. Hope this is helpful!

I actually asked about this yesterday at the pedi appointment. My LO arches his back after feedings, spits up out of his nose and mouth had some blood in his snot when he sneezed and sounds wet with nursing. I was told that all newborns have some degree of "reflux" due to the the sphincter to the stomach being weak. This is GER.True reflux is GERD and is treated with medication. My pedi recommended having baby upright for 20 mins after feeding and also found he was eating too much at feedings. I would generally let him nurse for as long as he wants but it was suggested to limit to 20 mins each side and nurse more often. He loves to eat and it seems was stuffing himself like thanksgiving dinner with each feed, which made things worse. Dr said that unless there is blood in his spit up or green bile...all of what he is having is normal until his digestive system is more developed. Good luck!

My lo is on Prevacid for GERD. She spits up out of her nose and mouth very forcefully, wet hiccups, arches back and cries when being burped, and you can often here her actually refluxing. She also has MSPI and if I accidentally eat something with diary her reflux is severe. The medicine helps tremendously. My other baby had severe GERD as well.

DS1 had reflux. He would spit up after every feeding, an hour after eating, 2 hours after eating, almost everytime he was laid flat. He would arch his back and scream, even in his sleep. We tried different formulas and none really helped except soy but that was more with the gas than reflux. I tried keeping him upright after eating for 20-30 minutes, burping every 1/2oz instead of every oz. Made no difference. At 2 months old he was put on Zantac and within 24 hours he was a completely different baby (we switched doctors at 2 months because his first refused to acknowledge the reflux and said he was just a spitty baby and I knew it was more than that). He still spit up frequently but was no longer screaming and arching his back. He was on the Zantac until he was around 7 or 8 months. Most babies will outgrow it by age 1.

My oldest had horrible reflux. He would projectile vomit after every feeding. Constantly. He would arch his back and throw his head back and scream. He would vomit in his sleep. They put him on what I believe is Zantac and it helped a little. Changed his formula many times before learning he was allergic to milk protein and soy amount other things so he ended up on Neocate formula. Super expensive but turned him into a new baby. My DS ended up seeing a pediatric GI that diagnosed his issues. His ped at the time (no longer with this doctor) was telling me it was all in my head and there was nothing wrong with him. One look from the GI and he knew something wasn't right. Sometimes you just have to trust your mommy gut. No one knows your child better than you.

We also had a screaming, spitty, squirmy baby after feedings. We took her in and dr said that all babies can spit, but if their in obvious pain/discomfort, meds are usually prescribed. We're giving her Zantac, but also add 1tsp rice cereal per ounce in bottles and it's made a world of difference. Even before starting the Zantac she didn't spit up much and seemed so much more comfortable. She's now eating more, sleeping better and just seems more content.
