skipping cow's milk

I have heard a ton of people that are planning to skip cow's milk (both on the bump and irl) and was wondering the reasons people have... I am loosely considering it but need some more info..thanks

Re: skipping cow's milk

  • We don't drink milk, I'm in the mindset that cow's milk is for calves not humans.

  • I am lactose intolerant and my kids don't like milk. We drink almond milk. We also take calcium supplements.

  • okay so it seems like most people are doing it either because their family already doesn't consume it... Got it... I just didn't know if there was some other health concern that I was missing
  • i think the biggest thing i have heard is that cows milk isn't natural for humans. cows milk is for cow babies. and humans are the only things in existence that feed off another animals milk. there are some concerns that some people have that its not natural and our bodies can't process it.

saying that, we drink cows milk in our house. though we might look into switching over eventually if they can prove concerns to be true, Ben will be switched over to cows milk. people have been drinking cows milk forever, the concerns i understand, but i don't see it to be an issue personally.

  • We have milk in the house. I use it for cooking sometimes and DH drinks it sometimes.  That said, I don't plan on feeding DD cow's milk if we have breastmilk available.  I'd rather give her almond milk or soy milk if she needs a whole bunch for a bowl of cereal.

  • My DH and I stopped buying milk about two years ago. We personally don't feel milk is an important part of a healthy diet. I also have some ethical issues with the dairy industry. The way the cows are treated in order to produce milk as well as the effects the cows are having on our environment, ie. how many resources it takes to produce the crops needed to feed them. Since we've stopped drinking milk we've found some great alternatives that work for us.

  • Do people not give milk at all past a year (focusing on other fluids)? Give formula or breast milk? Or give non-cow milk? I would love to know all of my options before deciding.

  • I personally do not drink cow's milk (mainly because I don't like the taste) but I do have it in my coffee etc. I may give it to DD occasionally but we plan on mainly doing almond milk or coconut milk.

I just talked to my pediatrician about this and she said that vitamin d milk is recommended because it helps them get fats in their diet--yet she also acknowledged that the American diet is full of fat so cows milk isn't necessary.

I think it's a personal choice for each parent, and I personally prefer almond milk because it's what I use most often but I am not opposed to her having milk and milk products on occasion.

I'm BFing and plan to continue so I won't be worrying about other options yet but we use almond milk at home in cereal. We only really drink water at home [well and beer/coffee but that's not appropriate for DD] but I've heard an almond-coconut milk mixture is best because coconut has lots of good fat.
