Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Still swaddling at 3.5 months...

My little one has been sleeping through the night for a while now. we have the swaddle that is like a sleep sack but there is material at the top with velcro to swaddle his arms.  He is outgrowing the swaddle lengthwise so i thought i would try having him sleep without the swaddle.  he woke up in the middle of the night and it took both my husband and i an hour to get him back to sleep.

think i should keep swaddling at night since he likes it?  or just stick with not having one and give hime time to adjust.  any advice?

thanks!

Re: Still swaddling at 3.5 months...

  • No advice since I'm still swaddling LO very tightly at night as well. We've been using Swaddleme's since she got big enough to fit the Small/Medium at around 4 weeks. We've graduated into the Large now. LO's been STTN since 9 weeks and I refuse to give up the swaddle at night because of this.

However, we are slowly starting to wean her off the swaddle during naps. Her first stretch of her naps are unswaddled. But then she'll wake up 30-40 minutes and has a hard time going back down. So we swaddle her for her 2nd stretch of her nap, if she's still sleepy.

So I guess maybe start with unswaddled naps?

  • I would personally start weening the swaddle. Even start with naps. Sure, it took you and hour but I bet the next night it will take less and within a few days, he won't wake at all. You have to do it eventually and the younger they are the easier it will be and less time it will take. I actually found that my DS slept better unsaddled but every baby is different. Being patient and persistent will help him get through it.

  • Start weening the swaddle by swaddling with the arms out. This will also help with the length problem wind the swaddle will start under the arms. The first night or two may be rough but lo will get used to it. That's what we did and lo doesn't need swaddle at all now.

    New Mommy!!!

  • I'm still swaddling at 4m. I plan to start weaning with one arm out followed by two eventually. I go back to work in 2 weeks and I know I should get it done now, but I'm afraid lol

  • Sooner or later, once baby starts rolling, you will have to wean. Maybe try a sleep sack now to get it over with ? But if it doesn't go well, you can keep swaddling... until you can't anymore!

  • I went through this with our son. He loved being swaddled and it helped him sleep through tbe night but at exactly 4 months he was rolling over while wrapped and became a danger to himself. We started with 1 arm out for a few nights then both arms out and after a week totally unwrapped. It was a very difficult transition and he would wake himself up a lot. Now hes 5 1/2 months and goes to sleep on his own. I give him a little blanket to sleep with which comforts himif he startles himself.

  • We moved from the swaddle to the magic sleep suit which is great. You can also google the "escape proof swaddle" which leaves their legs free. You can do that plus a larger sleep sack- that's what we did until DD started getting out of the swaddle.

  • Our little girl was swaddled until she was 4 and 1/2 months. She loved being wrapped tight but to wean her off we let her sleep unwrapped in a rock and play of sorts. The sides kind of cocoon her so she felt confined.  After a few nights we put her back in her crib unswaddled and she be sleeping through the night ever since. Good Luck! It wasn't easy! :)
  • Try the zipadeezip!  It transitions the baby out of the swaddle.  It worked miracles for me and tons of other people!  You can search zipadeezip online and they are also on Facebook!
  • @karieckart Wh is every post you have made about the zipadeezio? Did you invent this product or something? I call SPAM.

  • We swaddled for 4 or 5 months. Our pediatrician said there was no harm. You may end up with one of those kiddos who likes to be tucked in tight at night. Halo swaddle sleep sack comes in a medium size. Hard to find but they do exist.
  • Magic Sleepsuit here. It is wonderful.

  • are you kidding me?  It worked so well for me!  What is wrong with you!  I'm trying to help pinottoparenthood!  Wow!
  • This is Ava in her zipadee.  I am NOT spam!
  • We swaddled our LO from 8 weeks til she was 4.5 months.  At 4 months she started rolling over but didnt necessarily do that in her crib.  i tried cold turkey at 4 months with no swaddling it was awful.  So i started swaddling again for another week then did one arm out, one night, both arms out, then a sleep sack.  it worked well.  It did take about 1 week of occasionally waking up but by the end of that week she was back to sleeping through the night. she is now 7 months and sleeps through the night great.  we can put her down at 8:30-9pm and on the weekends she sleeps until 8am-9am during the week we have to get her up at 6:15am.  I will say she is a blankie girl which made us really nervous but after we stopped swaddling she wanted a small blanket.  So i'd give her the smallest lightest receiving blanket i could find and she'd cuddle it and sleep all night.  I asked the doctor about it and she said it was fine and we also have a video baby monitor too.

A 2 second google search as I just did would show you that the zipadeezip is a real product with  story testimonials and a story. I don't know how it sounds like Karie is spam.... she's had great success with it and good for her to share that with someone who could possibly benefit from it.

I think this is a really neat product and I totally would have given it a go if I needed to transition a swaddle sleeper.

  • I'm having all these same issues! DD is soon to be 5 mths, I've started to nap out of the swaddle. But at night she's still Velcro Swaddles. Her arms just keep her awake. I'm worried about her starting to roll in the sack. I'm going to try the 1 arm out and see how that goes! Thanks everyone
  • I'm glad I'm not the only one! We've tried switching to a sleep sack but LO just cannot handle her arms moving at night. I'm definitely going to try one arm out and hope I can wean her out of the Swaddleme.
