I'm laughing only because they think their healthcare is free. It's not free, they pay taxes on every purchase they make and that goes to pay their healthcare.
@littlemermaid: it is free in the respects that we do not have to pay a penny to walk into a clinic or hospital, we do not get a bill in the mail for services, we do not have to pay deductibles and we do not get turned away for lack of insurance. Our healthcare is universally available to every Canadian. So in essence- it is free. The taxes I pay aren't missed. It's such small amounts over time. Our medication costs are not all jacked up either.
@littlemermaid - their healthcare is free in the same way our public schools are free in America. Sure, we pay for schools through our taxes, but the the reward is much greater than the tax.
If you pay taxes towards something then it's NOT free!!!

Ok then....
In that case our schools, roads and police/fire services aren't free either.

The point is, while you laugh at us Canadians, the meaning behind the term "free" is what I posted above. We may say "eh" and eat cheese and gravy covered French fries but were are not dummies. We know where our tax dollars go. We also know that we don't get charged tens I thousands of dollars to give birth to our children. I have 3 children and the taxes I have paid in my lifetime do not come close to the cost of having one child in, let's say, the USA. So YES a large portion of MY healthcare is free.

I have 2 children and I didn't pay thousands of dollars to give birth either. I had insurance to cover that. No one said you were dummies, who said that? It's just a different way of thinking when it comes to healthcare. I don't want someone telling me that I have to be put on a waitlist to get an MRI, or to get special therapies for my child. I don't want someone telling me that I have to wait to get a necessary surgery. I have relatives and friends who live in Canada so I know all about your healthcare system.
We pay for an overall system to be in place however our personal usage within that system is free and uninhibited regardless of how much (or little) service we require.
Well this was a fun debate. Wait times for non emergent procedures is a trickle down effect of our universal healthcare. I work in hospital as a nurse and there is rarely a day/night that we don't go into over capacity. We have a small hospital and a lot of sick people. Our homeless, incomeless and our children (who do not pay taxes) also get "free"healthcare. It is great to be Canadian.

No, you didn't say it, but you sure as hell implied it.

Don't many states have sales taxes too? And some have really high property taxes that help fund public ed and some health care? I thought that was the case in California for example. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
And @littlemermaid it's likely to be more our higher income tax than our relatively small sales tax that funds the healthcare system. I pay 5% goods and services tax on most things in my province. But you probably already knew that, since you know all about our system.

BULLFUCKINGSHIT. I do not think it's FUCKING free. None of us do you dumbass. Every FUCKING TWO WEEKS I have a payroll deduction call Federal and Provincial Tax which is given to provincial health services via transfer payments to pay for said services. This does not include the health insurance I pay for - $500 A MONTH, for things not covered by not so universal health care.
And FYI, in case your ignorance is still showing, I am out personally about $80,000 out of pocket for services not covered by anything, yet still necessary for life, for ds.

I'd probably laugh at this normally but I need $8k for a lab test for ds so not finding it too funny tonight.
I'm really sorry @gimmietimmies. I hope everything is okay.
@missyishere I'm not okay. I don't care (probably like the first time EVER on TB) that I blew up on my response, I've had a shitty couple of days. Health care doesn't cover everything. I just got told we got denied coverage, again, for a test that could lead to a diagnosis that we've been waiting 15 years for. And potential save his life. To say I'm pissed doesn't cover it, and that meme (and the stupid statement later) certainly didn't help. I don't have $8000 to cover it and insurance won't touch it. And I just got other bad news, so yeah.

@gimmietimmies- What a nightmare. I'm so sorry for everything you are going through! If there is every anything that we internet strangers might be able to help with don't hesitate to ask.

Yes, @littlemermaid, it's clear you know all the things about Canadian healthcare. More so than the Canadians themselves!
I, personally, wouldn't mind waiting for something that wasn't emergent. Especially if it cost me SO much less than it does in America.
Also, I call BS on your birth not costing you thousands. Your insurance may have paid for that, but you paid thousands for your insurance.
This is my siggy. Love it.
