Temperature and illness

My daughter has been throwing up for two hours. She is 18 mo and this is the first time she has been sick so I have no idea what is normal or not.

My question is...

Is it bad if she is throwing up and her temperature is actually a couple degrees below normal? Her normal temp on our ear thermometer is 99.7 and it is reading at 97.4 now. I know the ear thermometer is wrong because it regularly reads my temp at 100.7 and the thermometer in my mouth says 98.4. I cannot get her to let me use the 30 second thermometer on her armpit or mouth.

She is also very pale maybe even a little yellow but that may just be her olive skin tone. And she threw up every 5 minutes for an hour and then about every 15 minutes for another hour.

I feel like I am overreacting/over thinking this but my poor baby :(

Re: Temperature and illness

  • I would call the pedi. That sounds like a lot of throw up for a little one. Hope she feels better soon.

  • Call your pedi.

  • Does your pedi have an after hours number to call?

  • I would reach out to the pedi after hours. GL

  • Thanks guys. I called the nurse hotline and they just said if she throws up for 12 hours to take her in. She is still throwing up every 15 minutes.

Her pedi doesn't have an after hours and the nurse hot line is through our insurance.

  • Take a rectal temp, they are the most reliable temps for kids under 2.

  • Try ice chips to get little bits of liquid in her. Also, is you have pedialyte, I've used the little medicine cups to get electrolytes in my kids.
  • I have a call into an on call doctor at a children's hospital (a number on the pedi's answering machine). She just drank the tiniest bit of pedialyte...like maybe an oz. Butshe hasn't barfed it back up yet so FX she is doing better.

  • good luck!
  • Thanks guys. I feel like I jumped the gun because 4 1/2 hours of this and suddenly she is fine. She drank some pedialyte about 20 minutes ago and then she just sucked down a blueberry pouch because she asked for it. Now she is trying to avoid bed time.

I did finally get an answer though. The pediatric nurse at the children's hospital said if she throws up for 8 hours straight/over a dozen times in 8 hours then to bring her in for some nausea medicine. Also, if she was on certain meds they would have us come in sooner to make sure she could keep her meds down.

Hoping to get her to sleep and be all better in the morning!

    Thanks again :)

  • Late to the party but I'm glad she seems to be feeling better.  FWIW, last time my kid was sick we literally had to give him fluids in teaspoon amounts in a medicine cup.  Teeny, tiny barely sips because anything more was too much for his stomach.  We did a teaspoon ever 10 minutes or so until he stopped up chucking it.
