Cloth Diapering

Smelly diaper rash--Update

Update:

So, it's not yeast or fungus!  The dr. took one look at him and said "he's allergic to his diapers."  He gave us a steroid cream.

Now what?  Do I just strip my dipes and go back to cloth once his rash clears?  Change my detergent--I"ve been using Charlie's Soap?  I'm pretty sure we have hard water..does that have anything to do with it?  Also, do I have to use the steroid cream for a contact rash?  I made the grapefruit seed extract coconut oil concoction.  Will that be enough?

Re: Smelly diaper rash--Update

  • Well, that's a bit of a broad statement to say he's allergic to his diapers. He could be sensitive to polyester fleece, suedecloth, the detergent, or wetness (if you're using natural fibers). I'd start with doing  a hot water strip and changing detergents. DS was sensitive to Charlie's but has done fine with Tiny Bubbles.

I think the steroid cream will probably ease the inflammation faster than the natural concoction, but it's up to you what you prefer using. When DS's eczema flares up, sometimes the steriod cream is the only thing that fixes it. Other times I can get it controlled with coconut oil and Magic Stick.

  • What kind of diapers are you using?
I would strip the diapers in case he's allergic to the detergent.  I would use the prescribed cream, but it is up to you.

ugh, I hate unhelpful doctors.  a steroid only solves the symptoms, doesn't help the underlying problem.  human and pet doctors prescribe it like its candy.

I'd do what @tjkdlhb said.  I hope LO feels better soon!

  • I tried to get fancy and update my previous post earlier, but I have no clue how to do that, really... The dipes are primarily prefolds with a basic cover. My MIL watches him during the week and she loves to use them, whereas I reach for our AIO or pockets. So, sometimes a BG or an applecheeks. She's been changing him every two hours too. At night, it's sometimes an s'bish obf or a sposie with a wool cover because he always leaks. His rash has come and gone for four weeks, so I'm guessing the wetness from the natural materials may be playing a part? I washed all the dipes and covers in TT, GSE and bleach because I was sure he had a fungus. Do I still need to do the Dawn? Also, I do ALL laundry with Charlie's. If he is allergic, wouldn't he have a reaction all over? Or does the dampness factor make that irrelevant?
  • The dampness would make it worse. I wouldn't do the dawn.

  • I've never used Charlies, but for some reason I feel like I've read that a lot of babies have reactions to it.
  • Fleece or silk liners?
