Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Still not crawling

DD is 11 months and she's still not crawling. Is any one else dealing with this? She has only recently begun pushing up on her arms and scooting backwards. She rolls everywhere and can get into a sitting position if I help her get her balance while pulling up her legs. But she can't do everything on her own. Also, she's not saying anything more than the occasional mama or dada.

Re: Still not crawling

  • That is pretty normal. Some babies never crawl, they just go straight to walking. It is not a developmental milestone. And with the talking, I wouldn't worry yet. From what I understand, a pediatrician will look into an issues if they are not meeting the criteria around 18 months. Just be patient and enjoy your LO, and good luck!

  • Though my 11mth old is walking (small steps, not yet a pro), she isn't saying anything. No mama or dada or at least a 'No'. All babies are different. If your pedi isn't worried about it you shouldn't be either :)

  • Sounds like my DD, who ended up being diagnosed with low-normal muscle tone. She was late on all her gross motor. She started commando at 11 months, transitioned from lying to sitting on her own at like 12 or 13 months, crawling off the floor at maybe 14 or 15 months, and standing/walking at 20.5 months.

She is now 31 months and totally, completely caught up to all her age mates.

I might bring something up at the child's 12 month appt, and if she isnt walking by 18 months, maybe consider a little PT. My DD needed 6 weeks of PT and she was up and going. Your child might just have some lower tone, which is totally no big deal.

  • Also I should add that my 10-m-o DS isn't saying any words (just random babble).

I think my DD said maybe mama at her 12-month appt, and also maybe uh-oh. I can't remember her saying much more than that. She is now speaking in complex sentences.

  • My nephew didn't crawl until he was 2 days short of 12 months and then didn't walk until 16 1/2 months.

It is totally within normal. And like pp stated, some babies never crawl.

  • Like others said, everyone's different.. My son started crawling at 8 months and walked at 11 months and potty trained at 18 months.. My sisters kid is only 4 months older and he was behind on everything compared to my son. I wouldn't worry.. But the day your baby learns you will be sooo happy! It's a great feeling :) good luck
  • My DD#1 didn't pull to stand or crawl until 11.5 months.  But she was walking by 13 months.  She didn't say any words until just before 12 months.  She was just happy to sit with her toys and never move.  The day she started crawling she must have realized there was more in life to see...she hasn't stopped moving since!

  • Just another voice relating. I was worried about DS not crawling as he seemed to be the only one in our baby group not crawling.
But it's totally normal. Agree with PP that maybe at 18 months it may come up as an issue, but a totally overcomeable issue (is that a word) so not worth worrying even then.

  • My brother in law went from nothing to walking at 12 months. Dd2 babbles mama directly at me and nothing else (whereas dd1 had a dozen words at 1). I don't think you need to be worried about anything.

  • My son just rolls all over the place too. He gets where he wants though. He can go from sitting to lying down, but can't go the other way yet. If a toy isn't too far away, he will pull himself with his arms and shove with his toes to get it and will crawl/shove himself backwards, but he doesn't crawl at all. His mil said that his dad did the same thing. He does say a few words. He says ma ma, the occasional da da, nana sometimes, ah ah when he sees a dog or hears a dog bark, and just recently buh bye. I wouldn't worry a thing about it like others said.

  • I guess my sister was like that, my mom said I walked really young but my sister rolled everywhere and pretty much skipped crawling.
  • Just adding an update. My 10.5 month old DS was commando crawling (on belly) since maybe 9 months, but within the last week and a half, he went from that, to pulling up to his knees, to crawling belly off the floor, to pulling up to stand -- it happens that quickly!

  • My DD will be 11 months on Sunday and she doesn't talk either. Rarely I hear dada and mama and it isn't directed towards us. I'm not worried.
