HELP: Take home outfit

I'm so frustrated right now. Not sure what to bring baby home in. Based on my US on Wednesday the baby is 7lbs 7ozs. I'm 36 weeks 2 days as of today. So I'm seating here wondering especially what size or sizes should I take with me. Then I'm thinking about a sleeper, onesie and socks, and I'll just call it a day. I'm not sure what the tempature will even be. How can something so simple be so mind boggling?

Re: HELP: Take home outfit

  • LOL I feel your pain as I've been trying to pack my hospital bag today and can't for the life of me decide what clothes I want to take for myself other than a nursing sleep bra, nursing tank and cozy pair of sweatpants. My sad sad brain doesn't even want to think about it.

My advice regarding baby outfit is to keep it simple and take a one piece outfit in both newborn and 0-3 month sizes. Keep in mind the estimate could be off and baby might surprise you and fit into a newborn size. I would pay attention though and not take one that was super small, as different brands run smaller or bigger. Also, I would keep it long sleeved. No matter where you live I highly doubt it's going to be hot in November. Also, for a take home outfit it's recommended not to use a gown in the car seat, so stick to something with legs.

  • Thanks! Two brains are better than one and what you just said made it much easier for me. My brains feel like scrambled eggs. LOL

Yes, I noticed a very big difference in the size of clothing based on the brand. And as for myself, I have the bag but nothing is in it. I'm just not with it.

  • I've got most of the "stuff" packed aside from what I'm still using, I just can't decide about the clothes. I am usually really cold in hospitals but I've read a lot of comments about people being hot. So I have no idea what to expect.

  • I'm deciding on my clothes right now to wear home. The weather has been changing up a lot around here. It's going to be in the 70's this week and then drop by the weekend. I guess have what I can at least dress in layers if needed.

  • You two are so good.  I keep thinking "I need to start packing my bag for the hospital" but that is about as far as I get.  I packed way too much crap the last time so this go round I am going light.  I can always have someone bring me anything I forgot and I am not moving in lol.  As for the going home outfit I don't know what sex this child is.  My Mom happened to be at the Carters Outlet the other day and saw an adorable gender neutral outfit in newborn and picked it up for me.

My daughter was born weighing 7lbs 1oz and 19 inches long and I only had 0-3 month outfit for her to wear home and it was ridiculously too big.  I am assuming that this one will be slightly bigger but probably not by much so I am only packing the newborn size.  If s/he comes out a chubba bubba then I can just have my Mom return the outfit for me and get a gender appropriate outfit.  I am not super picky and she is pretty good about nailing things that I like so I trust her judgement.

I am more worried about what to pack for myself.  I am the worst!!!!

  • If I deliver when I'm suppose, she'll be about 9lbs or a little more. This is my fourth child, but she's the only one to be delivered during a chilly season. My baby shower is this weekend coming but I may need to buy something just in case I don't make it. She's acting like she's ready to come now.

Don't worry too much about it. If it's a little big it's not going to hurt anything! We were totally unprepared for my first, and he arrived early without much warning. The only outfit we had that was warm enough was a 3-6 month fleece sleeper, so my DS came home looking like a tiny elf surrounded by yards of fabric! Oh well, at that point we just wanted him home, and he looks hilarious in the photos! :)

  • I figured if the outfit isn't right, I'll call my mom or hubby so they can bring another one. I'm definitely going to bring a NB and 0-3 months outfit just in case. Guess I'm just so anxious to get this over with.

  • They do look swollen when born. I know mine looked huge but smaller just before leaving the hospital. Unfortunately, my first two couldn't fit NB clothing at all and my third just barely fit it.

  • I think I have the LO's stuff down but not mine. I keep reading to that people wore yoga pants after but I keep wondering will they be too tight, especially if I need a c-section for some reason. As for a sleeping nursing bra where do you recommend buying one?

I got lucky and found 2 Motherhood Maternity sleep nursing bras for six bucks at a consignment sale. They were practically brand new and they are so comfortable. Other than that I can't make a recommendation based on personal experience...I was going to get some from Target and give them a try but now I don't need to. Sometimes I see some on Zulily that look really comfy also.

I had the same thought about yoga pants.

  • The last place I purchased a maternity bra was with Target. The lady fitted me for one at JCPenney's but Target had a sale, so I went with them.

  • By the way, those layettes are so cute. I love Carter's for babies. They last a long time.

  • I may do the yoga pants again to help as a binder for my belly. Especially with the nursing, it helped a lot with healing too.

I still need nursing bras and I'm praying I can nurse longer with this baby. I nursed for only three months with my third child, because my pressure started going back up. I was so sad and got depressed. And that doctor, which was my primary care doctor didn't even try to give me alternative meds that wouldn't affect the baby when my OB/GYN said there were some.

If you're still looking for nursing bras:
I happened to be in Babies R Us last Friday night in the Atlanta area and they had their Thyme brand of maternity clothing on sale, including the nursing bras. About $15 on sale, so maybe worth a look. I think the sale ends in a week or so, but I could be wrong.
I bought a pair of their jeans (@ 50% off) and I've finally found a brand that fits my longer inseam and isn't huge in the thighs.

also: my 2 cents worth about take home outfits, My plans are to bring a footed sleeper and a short sleeved onesie as an extra layer if needed, as well as a knit cap and light weight blanket. I am due mid Feb, but my older kids have arrived early.
Snapped outfits make easier diaper changes than the ones with zippers, and should your LO need any special monitoring (ie NICU) the zipper outfits are not allowed by the nurses, speaking from experience...

  • I'm going to check those bras out in my area. I'm in VA. And I'm leaning toward the same as far as take home for baby. I do want something cute for her hospital pics too. I'm going to see what I get at my baby shower this weekend or I may just get something just in case.

  • My older two were 7lbs 7oz and 6lbs4oz and both had to wear preemie outfits home because newborn just swallowed them whole. The preemie size was even kinda huge on my son, though. With my daughter, I just had a little onesie, pants, and jacket outfit that was too stinkin cute and had my heart set on her wearing it anyway, so for pictures and the ride home we just rolled it and tucked it and made it work, then changed her into the preemie pajamas as soon as we got her home. With my son, we knew he was going to be 3 almost 4 weeks early, so my mom went and bought some preemie pajamas for us and brought them to the hospital, but I'd been on bed rest for a couple of months at that point, so I never had a chance to pick something out special for him myself. My mom did a good job though. I would just take your best guess on size and bring what you want, then keep in mind that it doesn't have to fit perfectly. Fold it and tuck it where needed and make it look cute enough for pics and getting the baby home in and then change them afterwards into something that fits better or back into the hospital onesie and blanket. As far as what to put on them in the hospital, most hospitals will provide a onesie or t-shirt and a blanket and a cap and that's really all they need.

  • I am packing premie, newborn and 0-3 months sizes for little one but haven't decided which yet... Too many choices.
  • I am due Nov. 30th and have a fleecy snowsuit and hat for the ride home, newborn long-sleeve sleeper and 0-3 month long-sleeve sleeper to bring along. If you're only in the hospital for 2 days, it seems crazy to bring more stuff.
  • Well I had my baby shower on Saturday so I have plenty to pick from and go from there. It's going to be in the mid 60s during the week I'm to have her but of course the weather can change her in VA. Cold one day and summer heat the next.
