Update on S/teething question

Last night was still pretty bad and when she woke up this morning she has a slight temp. I really think it's teething. She's not eating as much formula or solids (but still getting plenty to eat. We're about 6 oz less than usual).

So teething - does this mean it's about to come through? Or could this last for days still? When did your LO's tooth come through? Does it happen while they're sleeping? Sorry for all the questions. I'm grasping at straws.

Re: Update on S/teething question

  • I think I missed a previous post on this, but ill tell you about my experience. M had a hell of a time with her first tooth. Sleep started shi&&ing the bed about 3 weeks before it broke through, then a week before she got a cold - with the works, runny nose, cough, fussy, not eating as much, loose/ often poops etc. it was really sad :( then the tooth came through a week later. I believe M is a long time early tether. Meaning she shows all the signs a d runs the gauntlet of symptoms before the tooth actually pops. So if its teething it could still last a few more days and may go away a couple days before the tooth is actually visible. You have to remember the worst part of teething is actually right before the tooth pops through. Once it pops through its not as painful for them. Also I highly reccomend Oragel Natural teething tablets -no numbing, they just take the edge off. Worked wonders over here. We just got our second tooth last weekend - same runny nose leading up to it but not nearly as bad with the symptoms as the first tooth. Good luck - teething sucks

  • Agreed, it could still be a few days. H had his first two coming in at once, but they broke through at different times. For him, he was fussy for a few days (and he's never fussy) and ran a slight fever for a day. It took probably a good week before the first one popped through and another two weeks for the other. He wasn't fussy the entire time though, just the few days leading up to the tooth actually coming through. Also, don't be alarmed if you see a little blood, H bled a little with the second one.

We did Tylenol when H was clearly in pain and a half dose each night he was fussing because of it. Also, anything cold was his favorite during all of this. We dunked his paci in ice cold water, froze his teethers and even froze one of his extra pacis.

  • Both of our boys are different with teething. I watch for the white bumps to appear (even before they appear at the top of the gum, you can see them making their way up the front) before I really attribute it to teething. One of my boys has the white bump for weeks before it breaks through. One will get it for a couple of days and be fine fairly quick. Also, both of my boys will do this weird thing with their mouths for about two days before it pops- like a puckering/ tasting something sour face. That, in combo with the drool is how I know to look for it. For us, the top teeth have been much more difficult, but I don't know if that's the case for everyone.

I agree on the cold thing. Our pedi is anti frozen things (freezer burn on the gums), but I did use frozen waffles. We also did washcloths in the fridge and they liked sucking water off of that. They LOVE cold, mushy fruit in their Kids.me silicone feeders. That is a huge hit for us. I've never given Tylenol, as sleep hasn't been disrupted (so thankful!!), but I know that can be a big relief as well.

    Hope it comes through soon!

  • With DS he would show signs of teething before there was any physical evidence that a tooth was about to cut. It was always the worst the few days leading up to the day when the tooth popped through. Luckily, he was a pretty quick teether. It really took a week or two from his first signs until the tooth would cut. He also got in all of his teeth very quickly one right after the other, sometimes two at a time. Every baby is different though. I know other babies who took a lot longer for a tooth to cut. With him you would be able to see the tooth just below the surface for the day or two before it cut through. Before that it was difficult for us to tell by looking at his mouth, but we figured out his behavioral symptoms very quickly. In fact, he had his four month appointment a little late, and the pedi said she didn't see any evidence of teething (swollen gums, etc). It was three weeks later that his first two teeth cut. We think that K&A are starting to teeth now too. I am not looking forward to two teething babies at once. Honestly, we gave DS Tylenol and after six months Advil to help him through - especially at bedtime. GL to you, hon!
