Does Midwife mean no ultrasound?

Sorry in advance for what I'm pretty sure is a stupid question.

I saw an OB for my last pregnancy, and had my first ultrasound at my 9 week appointment. It was awesome to see the little bean in there and made me relax a little to see the heartbeat. Anyway, I'd really like to do the same thing this time, but I'm switching to a Midwife (CNM) and have no idea if they do ultrasounds at all or that early.

I'm sure this is one of those "depends on the practice, every provider is different" situations, but just humor me. Also, I would call to ask, but I only have a number for the general scheduling department at the health system, and in my experience they don't know answers to specific questions.

So, I'm just wondering, for those of you that see a midwife, did you have an early ultrasound?

Thanks, please don't boo me off the stage.

  • Booooooo..... Get off the stage!

I go to a CNM and have had one u/s (due to a scare) and have another scheduled for Monday (that she had scheduled before said scare).

  • I just had my first appointment at 7w3d, and I had the appointment with a midwife as well. I had an ultrasound done for dating and pregnancy confirmation, and will have another one with the midwife at my 12 week appointment for genetic testing. I think in that regard, they are fairly similar to OB's.

  • First I am in Canada so things may differ if you are in the US. I saw an OB for my first pregnancy and also had all the ultrasounds (dating at 8wks, 12wk genetic testing, and 20 wk anatomy plus one at 36 I think for sizing). I had a midwife for my last pregnancy and I had all the same ultrasounds. But for both pregnancies I went to my family doctor to confirm pregnancy and he sent me for the first ultrasound. This time I didn't bother with going to the family doctor to confirm, I just called my midwife and booked the first appointment which will not be until 10.5 wks. I will opt out of the genetic testing but will get the anatomy scan at 20wks or so.

I think that both midwives and doctors can do the same ultrasounds but midwives may do fewer since they usually only see low risk patients who don't require as many.

  • I had a midwife with my first pregnancy and had an early dating u/s, a random one around 12 weeks because she couldn't find the heartbeat with a doppler, and then the AS.

  • I saw a midwife with my first and I had just one at 20 weeks and a couple towards the end (baby was big). I think it depends more on how high risk your pregnancy is.
  • Awesome, thanks everyone!
