Working Moms

Any HR professionals WFH 1 day a week?

My boss has approved me working from home 1 day/week but I need to request this from our HR Director at headquarters.  I have a 1 hour commute each way driving and taking public transportation, that's the main reason I'd be requesting.  There's a million other smaller reasons like being able to throw in a load of laundry, ability to go to my kids halloween parade (use that time as my lunch hour), logging in earlier, not having to clock out as early since picking them up would be less of a commute etc.  But not sure those are reasons I'd be comfortable giving.  As a background my H works nights so he sleeps during the day.  On weekends it's just me and the twins which means the chances of me getting stuff done around the house are slim to none and when he wakes up it's time for dinner/bath/bed and a little bit of play time as a family.   

Any other reasons that you can suggest if asked why?

  • I'm in hr I work in healthcare I would work on recruitment stuff license verification and any hr reports I could not get to while in the office

  • I don't work from home routinely, but do work as an attorney in HR and would suggest wording it a little differently when you speak to HR. You want to focus on how working from home benefits the company. I would suggest saying something simple like "my commute is one hour each way. By allowing me to work from home, I will have more time to devote to work on that day. Additionally, I believe my productivity would be higher due to less interruptions." Maybe not exactly depending on your industry, but hopefully that helps. Good luck!

    I agree with this.  Your request should be focused on how this arrangement can benefit them, especially if it's not usual that people work from home at your company.  They already know it will save you personally in commute time and the other "fringe benefits" of working from home - i.e., throwing in laundry, easier to run to personal appointments/kids activities, etc. - and everyone would probably love those working at home luxuries.  You need to convince them how it will benefit them, not you.  The best argument I would expect to hear from someone making this request is increased availability during what would be your normal commute time, and, therefore increased productivity.

  • I used to work in hr. just a suggestion when I requested to work from home I said it was bc of my commute. My request was declined by my manager's manager. My manager suggested I revise it to say it was to achieve work life balance and then it was approved that I could work from home. Companies think perks are work life balance not an easy commute. It is all on how it is presented. Gl!

    I work in HR, wording it as work life balance is definately a good angle to take, there are lots of people with killer commutes that still do it everyday so you need to differentiate your request from them by focusing on how this will have a positive impact on your productivity. You should make it absolutely clear that you are not considering this a replacement for childcare and that your current childcare arrangements will stay in place. I would also say you'll cover any expenses that are associated with working from home, such as internet, office supplies ect.

  • I WFH ft for a few years in HR. Focus on how this benefits them. Honestly, your employer probably doesn't care about your kids or personal life. Mine didn't. I spun it so it was all about them and did it ft for 4 years. GL!!
