High-Risk Pregnancy

Getting a cerclage

I'm getting a cerclage on Tuesday. My dr said to take that day and the next day off and then work from home for the rest of the week. She then said to come back in 2 weeks for an u/s. My cervix is around 2.8-2.9cm.

I'll obviously ask her but I guess no Halloween for me? I'm not sure how light my activity should be 2 days after the procedure.

Anything else I should know? I'm 14 weeks and this is preventative since my cervix is already short and I had a short cervix at the end of pregnancy #2. TIA!

Re: Getting a cerclage

  • I asked my doc about Halloween too. Since I was put on 100% bed rest I didn't think they'd let me do anything but he did say I could sit out and hand out candy but no walking around. I was a little bummed but at least I will get to be involved a little and my dh will take dd around to some neighbors houses. I would take it easy no matter what they say you can dos since it will only be two days past the procedure. GL!

  • She acted like I wouldn't be on BR after the cerclage but I have no idea how active I can be after. I have 2 small kids and it's hard to just sit on the sidelines. I'm trying not to lift them or anything but I want to be able to do some things. She said getting this will hopefully prevent BR.

I did 8 weeks of BR w/ DS so the thought of starting that at 14w is pretty daunting. :(

  • I think the easier you can take it now you will have a much better chance of staying off bed rest or at least delaying it. Bed rest for the whole pg would make me want to jump off a cliff! You dh stays at home, right? I would try to avoid being super active and really rely on him to do most of the strenuous stuff, if possible. It will pay off.

  • Ya he does.

Were you on PAL why does your SN seem so familiar?

  • Just take it easy after procedure. No heavy lifting is very important. Since its a preventive you have to play the wait and see game if Bedrest is in your future. I had my preventive at 14wks, didn't need Bedrest till 21-34wks but keep in mind I left work 16wks and was taking it veryyy easy.. Your dr is doing all standard protocol.. :-)
  • I was on LOS and then LOM and we were on the TB month boards together before that. :) I have not been on LOM in almost a year; just got too busy. Now I have just mostly stuck to the high risk board since all this happened. I don't want to get sucked in, lol!

I hope hope hope it holds up. It got down to around 1.5ish and stayed there w/ DS. Hoping the cerclage helps it stay even longer.

  • Mine was at 1.8 for 7wks and sore apparently I am carrying a big baby lol.. Mine reached a Plato. I am sure your will too.. Remember cervix are dynamic they gain length and lose length.
  • I had my cerclage on a Thursday (14 weeks) and rested both that day and Friday.  Saturday we took a road trip so I wasn't super active, but I did run errands and basically resume normal activity that day, and Sunday we did a decent amount of walking and then drove home, so again fairly normal activity.

However my cervix hadn't shortened at all, so I would definitely ask your doc for clarification.
