Success after IF

STMs weigh in...

My disclaimer is that we aren't TTC, but have been talking about our next venture even though DD is only 11 weeks and we spent nine of them in the NICU.

My question is how long you all waited to try for another, given the struggle. It took us about two years to get pregnant and while we don't want our kids too far apart, it sounds crazy to think about trying again in such a short amount of time.

Just curious about your individual experiences and thoughts on the subject...thanks!

  • That's kind of what we're thinking too, most likely. We have four frozen embryos left so we'd attempt with those. I'm not sure I have another fresh cycle in me...not to mention the financial aspect!

  • And thank you, we're so excited that she's home and we can snuggle on our own terms :)
  • We went back to our RE when our LOs were about 9 months old & given the way things have turned out I am glad we did. Congrats on your DD & good luck TTC #2 when the time comes.

  • FTM as well, we never prevented. We officially started TTC when DD turned one (tracking ovulation, TI...).

I also told DH I wanted another baby before we left the hospital.

  • I felt the same way about wanting another one quickly. The first thing I said to the dr after he told me we has to deliver at 30 weeks was asking whether or not this would affect subsequent pregnancies. DH was like "maybe let's get through this emergency c-section and THEN discuss future babies" lol
  • It took us three years to have DS. We started TTC just after DS turned one because I wanted to EBF for a year. It took us about six months for me to get pregnant again. DS was two years and a few months when K&A were born.

  • FTM here, but going through fertility treatments again right now. DS took us 4 years with 3 miscarriages, my pregnancy with him was riddled with complications (particularly through the first and early second trimesters), it was expensive, and there was a lot of bed rest... so we were in NO hurry to even risk pregnancy again. We even talked about never TTC again, and were planning for adoption. We eventually decided we wanted to try again though.

With my issues we knew that was not a good idea while DS was so small. After he turned a year we reevaluated, and the next month we headed back to my RE for a consult. We started TTC when DS was 13 months old. I think that if it hadn't taken us so long, and everything hadn't been so hard/uncertain, maybe we would have waited longer. I think that if we had gotten pregnant right away I would have been soooo grateful, but they also would have been very hard; we would have been due next month and DS is such a handful right now. But we didn't get pregnant, and we just finished our 4th medicated cycle since TTC#2 (plus one natural cycle). I didn't really count on it happening fast with our issues, I mean it did take 4 years for DS, so it wasn't a surprise. I don't regret waiting to TTC though... I've gotten a lot of wonderful one on one time with my son, and really got to focus on all those firsts, and like I said my son is really a handful too :)

If you don't mind my asking, what kinda of issues did you have? I had pre-e/HELLP syndrome diagnosed at 29w6d with this pregnancy and delivered that day. I'm nervous about another pregnancy having those complications. I know pregnancies differ person to person and pregnancy to pregnancy, but was curious what the dr told you about whether the odds were high of having repeat complications.

    Also, good luck TTC!
